About The Position

The Senior Medical Technologist, under general supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services, supervises day-to-day operations of the laboratory. The Senior Medical Technologist is able to perform all laboratory test procedures and is expected to fill in as a bench tech when needed. The Senior Medical Technologist is responsible for new employee orientation. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or Associate of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent education and experience preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or Microbiology or completion of advanced laboratory technology military training.
  • ASCP, AMT, or CLS certification preferred.
  • Mathematical, computer, reasoning, and language skills at the college level (2 years).
  • Ability to understand instructions, reason, and make judgments.
  • Ability to cope with mental and emotional stress associated with fast paced physical activity, demands of patients and their families, and maintaining an effective working relationship with peers, physicians, and other health care workers.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write the English language in an understandable manner. Ability to understand the meaning of words and ideas associated with them.
  • Ability to coordinate eyes and hands to fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements with speed; to skillfully manage multiple pieces of equipment, tubs, tourniquets, and needles.

Responsibilities

  • Provides laboratory services appropriate for the age of the patient, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Performs laboratory test procedures in all laboratory departments including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, blood bank, microbiology, serology and urinalysis.
  • Is responsible for the laboratory quality control program.
  • Performs instrument preventive maintenance procedures and performance checks in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and laboratory policy.
  • Supervises new employee laboratory department orientation.
  • Completes annual competency verification for laboratory employees.
  • Works as a medical technologist bench tech when needed.
  • Is responsible for laboratory operations in the absence of Director of Laboratory Services.
