This role is Hybrid Ottawa, Ontario Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer Position Summary Thales Canada, Defence & Security is engaged in supporting the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) through its In-Service Support (ISS) Programs. Between the AOPS & JSS In-Service Support (AJISS) and Minor Warships & Auxiliary Vessels (MWAV) programs, Thales Canada provides support to over 70% of the RCN fleet. Thales Canada is leveraging cutting edge solutions to deliver preventative and corrective maintenance, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), Program Management, Engineering and Lifecycle Material Management (LCMM), and new capabilities to numerous platforms. Thales Canada is looking for people interested in directly contributing to Engineering Change (EC) in the AJISS program. A multi-disciplinary team develops and delivers enhanced and new capabilities for RCN platforms through a broad portfolio of EC projects. We are looking Mechanical Engineers to deliver Engineering work products through all stages of the EC process. Familiarity with Systems Engineering concepts and practices is beneficial. A demonstrated ability to adapt to new technologies and processes is considered an asset. Regulatory Compliance Requirement This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of professional experience in the design and integration of complex systems in commercial and/or military domains.
  • Ability to obtain clearances as specified under the Regulatory Compliance section, below.
  • University or college degree in engineering or a related discipline.

Nice To Haves

  • In addition to the minimum professional experience specified above, experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:
  • Naval Architecture;
  • Marine Mechanical;
  • IPESA; and/or
  • C4 Combat Systems (in any domain);

Responsibilities

  • A Mechanical Systems Engineer designs, analyzes, integrates, and maintains complex mechanical machinery, HVAC, and power systems.
  • They bridge component-level design with system-level functionality, focusing on performance, safety, and efficiency.
  • Key tasks include preparing technical specifications, managing project timelines, troubleshooting, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • System Design & Analysis: Research and develop complex machinery, including analyzing dynamics and vibrations of systems.
  • Integration & Configuration: Own the overall mechanical configuration, ensuring subsystems work together and managing requirements.
  • Project & Technical Management: Prepare cost/time estimates, and support the installation, commissioning, and testing of equipment.
  • Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Develop maintenance standards and investigate failures or mechanical issues.
  • Compliance & Documentation: Review, approve, calculations, and specifications.
  • Conduct research on Naval Systems, System Requirements, Standards, and new technologies;
  • Generate, describe, and recommend solutions to customer concerns as part of the option analysis process;
  • Produce engineering artefacts including (but not limited to) first principles drawings and system schematics, Statements of Work, System Requirements Documents (SRD), Impact Analyses, and technical reports;
  • Survey and analysis of shipboard systems;
  • Planning, authoring, and executing integration and acceptance tests;
  • Coordinating and collaborating with a multi-disciplinary dispersed team.
