About The Position

Merrick & Company is seeking a Senior Mechanical Equipment Designer to join the Nuclear Services & Technology Business Unit in Aiken, SC. This role focuses on the design of custom equipment, including prototype/one-off custom equipment, gloveboxes, hot cells, specialty research equipment, and custom-designed mechanisms for handling radioactive and hazardous materials. The Senior Designer will work with and lead small teams to create 3D models, drawings, and fabrication packages for custom equipment, under the direction of a project engineer. Typical equipment includes containment systems (gloveboxes, hot cells, cleanrooms), material handling equipment, small-scale process piping & equipment, furnace systems, metal working systems (mills, lathes, rolling machines), and pressure vessels. Detailed design activities involve preparing Creo (Pro/E) models, fabrication drawing packages, evaluating and selecting purchased components, creating Bills of Materials, and completing equipment datasheets. The role also includes establishing model structure, drawing tree architecture, file naming conventions, and Windchill folder structures, as well as directing less experienced team members and providing checking support. All design activities must adhere to quality assurance/quality control procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in a related field.
  • Expert proficiency with Creo (Pro/E) and Windchill.
  • Demonstrated experience leading small groups of designers.
  • Demonstrated capability in the design of custom equipment and/or containment systems, development of design documentation including fabrication drawings, equipment datasheets and design record documents.
  • Ability to acquire a security clearance.
  • US Citizenship required for client projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with other 3D systems (CATIA, SolidWorks or equal).
  • 2D software (AutoCAD) and Autodesk Revit.
  • Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in the DOE and DOD market segments.
  • Hands-on experience with typical equipment.
  • Local candidate preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Produce 3D models, drawings, and fabrication packages of custom equipment, independently and with direction from the project engineer.
  • Prepare component, subassembly, and main assembly Creo (Pro/E) models.
  • Create detailed fabrication drawing packages.
  • Evaluate and select purchased components.
  • Create detailed Bills of Materials.
  • Complete equipment datasheets.
  • Establish model structure and drawing tree architecture for distinct deliverables.
  • Establish and maintain file naming conventions and Windchill folders.
  • Direct the activities of less experienced team members to produce final product.
  • Provide checking support for deliverables.
  • Conduct design activities following regimented quality assurance / quality control procedures.
