About The Position

Bodwé is hiring a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and execution of complex mechanical systems across a portfolio of projects. The role serves as a senior technical resource for high-performance buildings, ensuring that HVAC, plumbing, and specialty systems meet project design standards. It requires expertise in LEED and Green Globes certification and federal sustainability requirements, including the ability to complete certification processes. The position leads sustainable design strategies, energy modeling, and projects through the USGBC certification process. The engineer leads mechanical and plumbing design, performs project quality control, develops design narratives and construction documents, and supports construction administration. The position also manages project timelines and resources, coordinates with multidisciplinary teams, communicates project status, and navigates client criteria and review processes. This is a primarily sedentary, office-based remote or hybrid position. Hybrid work is available in Kalamazoo, Michigan, or St. Charles, Illinois. Occasional travel to company offices or project sites is expected, with approximately 10% overnight travel. Site visits may involve noise, dust, uneven surfaces, non-temperature-controlled environments, PPE, and work outside typical business hours based on project needs. Remote and hybrid work requires wired broadband of at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload; cellular hotspots and fixed-wireless cellular service may not be the primary connection.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering or architectural engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineering License, with ability to obtain reciprocity in target states.
  • At least 10 years of experience in MEP design of chillers, boilers, and VAV, VRF, and WSHP systems.
  • LEED certification and a proven track record of successfully certifying completed projects.
  • Strong understanding of ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 62.1, NFPA 99, IMC, IPC, IFGC, and other applicable codes.
  • Demonstrated expertise designing systems for complex institutional and healthcare facilities involving prescriptive technical standards and structured review processes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with clients, contractors, and internal parties.
  • Proficiency with relevant design software and project management tools, including Revit, HAP, Trace 3D Plus, and Bluebeam.
  • Proficiency with Office 365 products, including Teams/SharePoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Real ID or passport for commercial air travel.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • For remote or hybrid work, wired broadband (cable, fiber, or DSL) of at least 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload is required; cellular hotspots and fixed-wireless cellular service may not be the primary connection.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, architectural engineering, or a related field.
  • Project Management Professional certification.
  • Previous leadership experience, such as mentoring staff and managing, directing, and overseeing others' work.
  • Direct, verifiable experience managing design-bid-build or design-build projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering of complex mechanical systems, including central boiler and chiller plants, hydronic distribution and pumping systems, VAV and VRF systems, and water source heat pumps.
  • Lead engineering of complex plumbing and domestic water systems, including specialty systems such as medical gas distribution for healthcare environments.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to the design team on complex engineering challenges.
  • Review design drawings and calculations and perform full-project quality control.
  • Develop basis-of-design narratives, schematics and risers, equipment selections, control sequences, and performance criteria aligned with codes and owner goals.
  • Develop construction documents, technical specifications using SpecsIntact or Speclink, and detailed engineering reports.
  • Support construction administration, including RFIs, submittals, and site observations, and resolve field issues while maintaining design intent.
  • Lead LEED certification from conceptual design through construction administration, tracking and documenting credits and working to achieve them.
  • Perform building energy modeling, lifecycle cost analyses, and high-performance building simulations to optimize energy efficiency.
  • Interpret and apply federal energy regulations, including ASHRAE 90.1, and applicable sustainability design manuals.
  • Oversee internal project timelines and resources.
  • Collaborate with architects, interior designers, civil engineers, and other project consultants.
  • Communicate project status updates to interested parties and management.
  • Navigate client criteria, submittal processes, and reviews.
