Senior Mechanical Engineer

AutoStore System•Atlanta, GA

About The Position

AutoStore is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer to serve as a technical leader responsible for the architecture and development of key mechanical subsystems within its robotic and automation platforms. The role is intended for an engineer who has successfully taken complex mechanical or electromechanical products from concept through launch and has owned systems through development and production challenges, including reliability failures, wear and fatigue, manufacturing constraints, supplier quality, tolerance stack-ups, and design trade-offs. The engineer will balance performance, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost while developing innovative solutions for robust, scalable products. Responsibilities span mechanical system architecture, CAD design, analysis, prototyping, validation, production release, supplier and manufacturing collaboration, and ongoing product improvement. The role also works closely with electrical, firmware, software, controls, manufacturing, and systems engineering teams to integrate products for demanding automated warehouse environments. AutoStore is a global technology company founded in Norway that develops software and automation to orchestrate order fulfillment. It has more than 1,600 systems in nearly 60 countries and aims to deliver faster order fulfillment with minimal environmental impact.

Requirements

  • At least 9 years of experience in mechanical engineering and product development of complex mechanical or electromechanical systems.
  • Experience leading products from concept through validation, production launch, and sustaining engineering.
  • Strong proficiency with 3D CAD, FEA, FMEA, PLM systems, and engineering documentation best practices.
  • Experience designing mechanisms and electromechanical systems incorporating motors, gear trains, bearings, belt drives, actuators, sensors, and power transmission components.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical system dynamics, kinematics, fatigue, wear mechanisms, vibration, and reliability engineering.
  • Experience with GD&T, tolerance analysis, tolerance stack-ups, and design verification activities.
  • Experience performing structural, modal, and dynamic analysis of mechanical systems and moving machinery.
  • Experience selecting materials and manufacturing processes for high-volume products, including sheet metal, aluminum extrusions, castings, machined components, and injection-molded plastics.
  • Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Design for Reliability (DFR), and Design for Cost (DFC).
  • Experience working with global suppliers and contract manufacturing partners to support high-volume production.
  • Experience with requirements development, interface management, risk assessment, and system-level trade studies.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, including subsystem ownership, technical decision-making, design reviews, and mentoring engineers.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills and a hands-on engineering mindset.
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field; relevant experience may substitute for formal education.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing robotics, automation equipment, autonomous systems, material handling equipment, or industrial machinery.
  • Experience with warehouse automation, ASRS systems, or automated fulfillment technologies.
  • Experience with reliability growth testing, accelerated life testing, and field-performance analysis.
  • Experience working within cross-functional product development teams spanning mechanical, electrical, controls, and software disciplines.
  • Experience with automated warehouse products.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of mechanical and electromechanical systems from concept through architecture, CAD design, prototyping, validation, and production release.
  • Own subsystem architecture, component strategy, and technical trade-offs among performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Design and develop structural components, mechanisms, drive systems, robotic assemblies, and other electromechanical systems.
  • Lead and execute root-cause investigations of design, manufacturing, reliability, and field-performance issues.
  • Perform and guide FEA, fatigue analysis, tolerance stack-ups, dynamic analysis, vibration assessments, and design verification activities.
  • Drive DFM, DFA, DFR, and other DFx activities with suppliers and manufacturing partners for scalable, cost-effective production.
  • Own prototype builds, engineering validation testing, pilot builds, and production launch activities.
  • Partner with electrical, firmware, software, controls, manufacturing, and systems engineering teams to achieve successful product integration.
  • Develop robust mechanical systems for reliable operation in demanding robotic and automated warehouse environments.
  • Define and execute functional, environmental, vibration, fatigue, wear, and life-cycle testing to validate performance and reliability.
  • Support supplier development, component qualification, manufacturing readiness, and continuous product improvement initiatives.
  • Provide technical leadership through subsystem ownership, technical decision-making, design reviews, and mentoring engineers.
