About The Position

Lumafield is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their Hardware Group. This role involves designing, prototyping, and refining the next generation of industrial CT scanning systems. The engineer will collaborate across disciplines, including motion systems, structures, system integration, and user-facing features, to develop reliable, manufacturable, and innovative solutions. The position requires systems thinking, hands-on prototyping, and the ability to structure ambiguous design problems. The engineer will work closely with electrical, firmware, systems, and software engineers to create hardware that is both functional and user-friendly. This is a hands-on, in-person role based in Cambridge, MA.

  • Ability to identify appropriate solutions to ambiguous, under-defined, and open-ended problems.
  • Skill in navigating ambiguity and remaining resilient through project ups and downs.
  • Effective communication and coordination of requirements with other teams, tailoring messages to the audience.
  • Consideration of short- and long-term impacts of large technology choices.
  • Serve as a role model for other engineers and model a standard of excellence.
  • Enthusiasm for utilizing AI tools to improve quality and increase speed.
  • Typically have a bachelor's or master's degree and multiple years of relevant experience executing a broad range of activities directly applicable to the role.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading projects through a complete product lifecycle, including early manufacturing and into mass production.
  • Experience designing motion systems, precision mechanisms, or mounting for imaging systems.
  • Background in industrial automation, inspection, or scientific instrumentation.
  • A portfolio of mechanical designs, prototypes, or shipped products.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical aspects of mechanical design for complex assemblies and subsystems.
  • Develop well-scoped milestones to deliver on quarter-scale goals.
  • Follow inventions through the full product lifecycle, from concept and design to first engineering builds and transfer to mass manufacturing.
  • Accelerate project timelines by leveraging technical expertise to make informed tradeoffs in scope and execution.
  • Decompose business goals into technical solutions executable by multiple team members.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with stakeholders to identify technical needs and develop effective engineering goals.
  • Actively work with and mentor more junior colleagues.
