Senior Mechanical Engineer

Volund Manufacturing•Huntington Beach, CA
•$175,000 - $250,000

About The Position

Volund is building propulsion systems by combining advanced automation, precision manufacturing, and rapid iteration to move from prototype to production. Engineers work across the full stack, from concept and simulation to process code and machine execution, ensuring designs can be built and scaled. The Senior Mechanical Engineer owns engine component designs from initial concepts through released drawings and supports those components through machining, assembly, and testing. The role designs hardware such as compressors, turbines, combustors, housings, and related assemblies to withstand real operating temperatures, pressures, and speeds. This is a hands-on design role rather than a CAD-only position: the engineer works with manufacturing and test teams, resolves manufacturability and assembly issues, and iterates designs based on test data and feedback. The role requires Siemens NX proficiency, mechanical design experience, and a history of taking designs from concept through physical realization. Candidates must be U.S. persons because of ITAR export-control requirements. The stated salary range is $175,000–$250,000 USD; the final amount depends on various factors. Roles include an equity package and the listed benefits.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 3–7 years of mechanical design experience, with meaningful ownership of parts or assemblies.
  • Strong Siemens NX proficiency in modeling, assemblies, and drawings.
  • Experience designing for manufacturability and machining.
  • Hands-on fabrication or assembly experience, such as shop time, personal builds, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to take designs from concept through released drawings.
  • Must be a U.S. person as defined by ITAR, including a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with gas turbine, turbocharger, or other high-speed rotating machinery components.
  • GD&T and formal drawing release experience.
  • Familiarity with Siemens Teamcenter or similar PLM software.
  • Exposure to additive manufacturing, welding, or high-temperature materials.
  • Personal projects involving designing and building something that had to work.

Responsibilities

  • Design engine components and assemblies in Siemens NX, from concept layouts through detailed models and released drawings.
  • Own the design process from requirements and concept tradeoffs through detailed design, GD&T, and release into the PLM system.
  • Design components for the manufacturing and assembly processes required, including machining, additive manufacturing, welding, and brazing.
  • Work with shop and test teams to turn designs into hardware quickly and address issues discovered during machining, assembly, and testing.
  • Iterate designs based on test data, manufacturing feedback, and assembly experience.
  • Support light-off, characterization, and development testing, and stay involved in evaluating how the hardware performs.
  • Work across adjacent disciplines such as thermal, fluids, structures, and materials when needed.

Benefits

  • Equity package.
  • Platinum healthcare benefits, including medical, dental, and vision plans at no cost to the employee.
  • 100% covered basic life/AD&D and long-term disability insurance.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Lunch and a fully stocked kitchen.
  • Relocation assistance, depending on role eligibility.
  • 401k Savings Plan.
