About The Position

Performs advanced engineering research and analysis on a variety of mechanical components. Conducts quality control review, data reporting, and writes/reviews technical documents. Designs, analyzes, tests, manufactures, and maintains mechanical components and systems, tests equipment. Applies principles of engineering, physics, and materials science as well as an understanding of core areas including mechanics, kinematics, dynamics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, chemistry, life sciences and electricity along with tools like computer‐aided design and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment, and machinery; heating and cooling systems; transport systems; aircraft; watercraft; robotics; medical devices; weapons; and others. Researches, plans, designs, and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical, thermal hydraulic, or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Designs, develops, and implements numerical methods for Computational Fluid Dynamics or Structural Mechanics analyses using advanced programming techniques. Conducts research and evaluation of technologies and methods for efficient operation and control of energy, water, and other resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field with 8 years of experience or, master’s degree in related field with 5 years of experience or, PhD with 2 years of experience in related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.
  • Strong communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to lead/mentor junior-level staff is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Performs complex assignments by compiling and evaluating design and test data, preparing technical specifications, analyzing technical data to determine appropriate limits and variables for product, process or materials specifications.
  • Analyzes and interprets data collected.
  • Prepares technical reports and makes presentations to client, both formal and informal.
  • Conducts and/or leads small technical projects or phases of technical projects.
  • May provide technical direction to and coordinate the efforts of engineers and technical support staff in the performance of assigned projects within time and budget constraints.
  • Assists with proposal efforts.
  • May prepare technical sections of proposals.
  • Builds relationships with internal and external clients and presents research results.
  • Communicates with client regarding the schedule and quality of deliverables.
  • Contributes to IR&D studies.
  • Supports business development efforts led by others and secures follow-on work.
  • May assist with the coordination of and participation in Battelle-sponsored conferences.
  • May participate in scientific conferences, peer review panels, and increases company visibility through publications.
  • Oversees, mentors and trains lower-level staff.
