Senior Mechanical Engineer, Photonic Systems

PsiQuantum•Palo Alto, CA
•$117,500 - $197,200

About The Position

PsiQuantum is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to design complex optomechanical and optoelectronic packages. The role works closely with photonics, packaging, process, test, quality, supply chain, and external manufacturing partners to turn architecture and requirements into buildable, manufacturable, and verifiable package designs. The work requires strong skills in mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, electronics integration, optical alignment, and precision design principles. The engineer owns package and subassembly designs from prototype through production readiness and supports productization through design documentation, analysis, fixtures, test setups, supplier coordination, and manufacturing readiness. The role is part of a fast-moving environment focused on photonics packaging, process development, and production scale-up.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering, Optomechanical Engineering, Packaging Engineering, or a relevant discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience focused on optomechanical design, optoelectronic packaging, photonics packaging, or precision mechanical systems.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills across engineering, operations, quality, and supplier teams.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in resolving design, interface, and manufacturability tradeoffs.
  • Ability to support colleagues and external partners in meeting schedule, quality, and build-readiness objectives.
  • Experience managing subcontractors, coordinating supplier technical work, and supporting manufacturing partners.
  • Ability to execute deliverables against schedule and quality targets in a fast-moving productization environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Continuous learning mindset and interest in photonics packaging, process development, and production scale-up.

Responsibilities

  • Own package and subassembly designs from prototype through production readiness.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturability and Design for Assembly principles and produce supplier-ready build documentation.
  • Use GD&T for precision optomechanical interfaces, datums, fixtures, and inspection plans.
  • Perform tolerance analysis for optical alignment, mechanical stack-up, FAU attach, and package interfaces.
  • Generate and maintain process flow documentation, build travelers, and assembly sequence definitions.
  • Conduct DFMEA, PFMEA, CTQ mapping, and risk-analysis heat maps for package and process development.
  • Design and fabricate fixtures for alignment, attach, metrology, handling, and production build support.
  • Design and fabricate test setups for optical, mechanical, thermal, and process verification activities.
  • Generate and maintain BOMs, build standards, material callouts, and configuration-controlled package documentation.
  • Generate and maintain Specification and Drawing Trees for packages, subassemblies, fixtures, and supplier documentation.
  • Execute basic structural, thermal, warpage, and tolerance analyses to down-select designs and reduce build risk.
  • Use PDM/Arena, ECO discipline, drawing release, supplier documentation packages, and revision control.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, and manufacturing partners.
  • Deliver against schedule and quality targets in a fast-moving productization environment.
