About The Position

EXP is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer/Project Manager for its Mission Critical team. The role is based in California, with flexibility to work remotely, and requires site visits and in-person client meetings as needed. The employee will have the opportunity to work with a Fortune 500 client. The role involves leading mechanical design and project management across multiple projects, from developing and reviewing calculations, equipment selections, specifications, and design documents to coordinating with other disciplines, responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and resolving installation problems. The engineer will manage scope, schedules, work plans, deliverables, and budgets; oversee quality and code compliance; and provide direction and mentoring to design staff. Technical work includes HVAC and hydronic systems, equipment analysis and selection, psychrometrics, humid-climate design risks, and total energy concepts.

Requirements

10 or more years of project management and mechanical design experience.
A degree in engineering.
A professional engineering (PE) license.
Strong leadership skills.
Good communication capabilities.
Building design experience.
Proficiency working with CAD drawings.

Responsibilities

Prepare and review load calculations.
Apply applicable codes and review code-related items with designers to ensure compliance.
Edit specifications to reflect project requirements.
Develop equipment room sizes during schematic design (SD) and design development (DD) phases.
Select and schedule equipment, and meet with vendors to determine application-specific specification requirements.
Coordinate with other disciplines, including MEP/FP, architecture, and structural teams.
Respond to project RFIs and review submittals accurately.
Solve installation problems.
Apply risk management procedures to minimize EXP's and clients' exposure to problems.
Plan work and manage the design process within the available work-plan hours.
Understand the appropriate scope of SD, DD, and construction document (CD) deliverables, and provide appropriate documentation.
Work with project coordinators, project managers, and clients to meet milestones across multiple projects.
Manage and deliver revisions, including ASIs, and sketches according to the appropriate numbering conventions.
Edit and develop scopes of work and narratives, including SD narratives and bases of design.
Understand market-sector-specific engineering requirements.
Identify and properly provide relevant existing EXP details for projects.
Direct and mentor designer-level staff in their day-to-day responsibilities.
Take responsible charge of meeting EXP's design and quality standards.
Perform QA/QC reviews of designers' calculations and provide guidance and mentoring.
Determine drawing and specification content for designers to meet project scope.
Develop and monitor work plans in conjunction with other project managers.
Manage work plans and deliverables for multiple projects within budgeted hours.
Write studies and reports for project systems.
Write sequences of operations for AHUs, chilled-water, and hot-water systems.
Apply knowledge of chilled-water, hot-water, WSHP, and variable- and constant-flow systems.
Design and select air-side systems, including CV and VAV systems, coils, and fans.
Work with hydronic systems, including hot water, chilled water, condenser water, and steam.
Apply psychrometric knowledge to projects.
Perform advanced equipment selection and analysis for chillers, boilers, air terminals, cooling towers, air valves, HEPA filters, DX equipment, and water-source heat pumps.
Apply knowledge of humid-climate design risks and total energy concepts.
