About The Position

The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of petrochemical industry standards, drafting practices, and 3D modeling software while working closely with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary design teams. This role involves developing detailed mechanical and piping design drawings for petrochemical and industrial facilities, preparing and reviewing equipment layouts, piping plans, isometrics, sections, and installation details. The designer will generate 3D models using specific software, coordinate mechanical designs with other disciplines, perform field walk-downs, interpret codes and standards, and assist with equipment selection and constructability reviews. Additionally, the role includes supporting project estimating, scheduling, and material take-offs, mentoring junior designers, ensuring design deliverables are met, participating in client meetings and reviews, and developing client relationships.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of petrochemical industry standards, drafting practices, and 3D modeling software.
  • Ability to conduct field inspections in operating industrial facilities.
  • Ability to climb ladders, walk long distances, and wear required PPE in plant environments.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time behind desk working on their computer.
  • 15+ Years of mechanical design experience in petrochemical, refining, chemical, or industrial facilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree or technical certification in Drafting, Design Technology, Mechanical Design, or related field.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, CADWorx Plant Professional, CADWorx Equipment, Navisworks & CloudWorx.
  • Must be proficient in working with laser scan data and point cloud integration.
  • Strong understanding of piping design, equipment arrangement, and industrial plant layout practices.
  • Experience working with P&IDs, piping specifications, and mechanical equipment drawings.
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards including ASME B31.3, API, and OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to perform field verification and work in active industrial environments.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience supporting EPC or consulting engineering projects.
  • Experience with refinery turnarounds, maintenance projects, and brownfield facility modifications.
  • Experience with piping analysis software (CAESAR II).
  • Ability to obtain a TWIC card.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed mechanical and piping design drawings for petrochemical and industrial facilities.
  • Prepare and review equipment layouts, piping plans, isometrics, sections, and installation details.
  • Generate 3D models utilizing the following design softwares: AutoCAD, CADWorx Plant Professional, CADWorx Equipment, Navisworks & CloudWorx.
  • Coordinate mechanical designs with civil, structural, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines.
  • Perform field walk-downs to verify existing conditions and support brownfield modifications.
  • Interpret and apply applicable codes, standards, and client specifications including ASME, API, ANSI, and OSHA requirements.
  • Assist with equipment selection, piping material specifications, and constructability reviews.
  • Support project estimating, scheduling, and material take-offs as required.
  • Mentor junior designers and provide technical guidance to design team members.
  • Ensure design deliverables are completed accurately, on schedule, and within project scope.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and safety evaluations.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships through effective communication, professionalism, and responsiveness, while identifying opportunities for future projects and additional engineering/design services.
