About The Position

Type One Energy is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with first of a kind design and integration skills to provide conceptual, preliminary, and final design of systems and components for their stellarator fusion power plants. The role involves mentoring junior engineers on projects and systems such as vacuum vessels, divertors, and plasma facing components. The company utilizes advanced manufacturing methods, modern computational physics, and high-field superconducting magnets for its optimized stellarator fusion energy system and is committed to community engagement in clean energy technology development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline (Master’s degree preferred).
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in similar engineering environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership, project management, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to manage complex technical challenges.
  • Expert in mechanical design principles, failure modes, and lifecycle reliability.
  • Proficiency in cost, schedule, and resource planning.
  • Skilled in balancing trade-offs across performance, manufacturability, and regulation.
  • Experience with design of first of a kind components.
  • Familiarity with Computer Aided Design and Analysis software.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with design of fusion energy systems and equipment is desirable.
  • Experience with Siemens NX CAD software is highly desirable.
  • Experience operating within a PDM environment in CAD.

Responsibilities

  • Translating design requirements into functional stellarator components and systems.
  • Develop system and component designs and associated technical specifications for stellarator systems.
  • Analyze and align the interface requirements between and among stellarator systems.
  • Develop and validate Finite Element (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models using ANSYS, COMSOL, and other tools.
  • Develop procurement packages.
  • Resolve technical questions that may occur during fabrication efforts.
  • Act as a mentor to junior engineers on a variety of projects and systems including vacuum vessels, divertors and plasma facing components.
