This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight. We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will lead the design and development of pressure vessels, piping systems, and mechanical components, while ensuring full adherence to codes and standards. You will serve as the technical authority for code compliance, working across multiple projects to develop safe, reliable, and compliant mechanical systems. This position requires a combination of strong design capabilities, practical knowledge of manufacturing processes, and specialized expertise in applicable codes and standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field
  • 8+ years of mechanical design experience with at least 5 years focused on ASME code-compliant equipment
  • Proficiency in GD&T principles per ASME Y14.5
  • Experience with engineering calculations for pressure-containing equipment
  • Strong CAD skills with 3D modeling software (SolidWorks, NX, CATIA, or similar)
  • Experience with FEA tools for stress analysis and structural validation
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply code requirements to complex design problems
  • Experience working with quality assurance programs for pressure equipment
  • Knowledge of material selection considerations for various operating conditions
  • Familiarity with NDE methods and acceptance criteria
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Experience with design and certification of high-pressure or cryogenic systems
  • Background in aerospace, power generation, oil & gas, or process industries
  • Experience with risk-based approaches
  • Familiarity with welding engineering principles and ASME Section IX requirements
  • Experience with fitness-for-service evaluations
  • Knowledge of pressure relief device sizing and selection
  • Experience with pressure testing procedures and test oversight
  • Understanding of design requirements for specific services (hydrogen, oxygen, lethal service)

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed engineering calculations including stress analysis, thermal analysis, and pressure equipment sizing
  • Develop comprehensive technical specifications, design criteria, and engineering drawings
  • Create and maintain code data reports, design documentation, and compliance records
  • Review and approve vendor submissions for code compliance
  • Design pressure vessels, piping systems, and related mechanical components in accordance with applicable codes
  • Serve as the technical authority for code compliance, providing guidance to engineering teams
  • Develop inspection and testing plans that meet requirements
  • Support certification and recertification activities
  • Evaluate non-conformances and develop technically sound resolution strategies
  • Guide manufacturing teams on code-compliant fabrication techniques and requirements
  • Mentor junior engineers on code application and compliance practices
