About The Position

General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive with the electrification of our portfolio and the development of leading-edge central compute and autonomous capabilities. Our Central Compute Hardware (CCH) Mechanical Design team is a dynamic, high-energy innovative group focused on developing enclosures for next‑generation ECUs (Electronic Control Units) commonly shared across both future ICE and EV vehicles manufactured by GM. The team is responsible for developing the mechanical, EMI, and thermal design of new compute‑related electronics using fundamental 1st principles, CAD, and analysis while collaborating with GM Vehicle Packaging teams and our in-house electrical design teams. We are also responsible for conducting preliminary functional testing during development and implementing design changes as we learn from testing and obtain DFM/DFA feedback. We are seeking a Mechanical Hardware Engineer with strong NX and Teamcenter proficiency to support the in‑house development of GM’s Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) electronics. You will focus on CAD, drawings, and product data management for ECU housings and related components, partnering closely with senior technical experts to deliver robust designs into production.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 6-10+ years of mechanical design experience in complex assemblies (automotive, electronics, or similar), with at least 3+ years hands‑on in Siemens NX and Teamcenter.
  • Demonstrated expertise in NX: Parametric 3D part and assembly modeling.
  • Drawing creation and detailing per ASME standards.
  • Use of expressions, re‑usable features, and modeling best practices for robust designs.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Teamcenter: Managing large assemblies and configurations.
  • Structure management and BOM authoring.
  • Release/change management, including ECRs/ECNs and revision control.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical fundamentals (solid mechanics, materials, basic heat transfer, tolerance analysis, and GD&T).
  • Experience working with suppliers or manufacturing teams to refine designs for manufacturability, quality, and cost.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills; ability to work effectively across disciplines and locations.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple CAD/data tasks in parallel, prioritize effectively, and deliver to program timing.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with electronics packaging (e.g., ECU housings, power electronics, computers, or similar enclosures).
  • Exposure to EMI/shielding, sealing (IP / water management), and thermal management concepts (heat spreaders, TIMs, airflow, or liquid cooling).
  • Experience preparing inputs for, or reviewing results of, structural, vibration, and thermal FEA.
  • Experience with automotive product development processes, including release, change control, and launch support.
  • Familiarity with DFMEA / PFMEA and structured problem‑solving methods.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain high‑quality 3D CAD models and assemblies in NX for ECU housings, brackets, seals, and interfaces.
  • Guide GD&T and 2D drawing creation, perform tolerance stack analysis, and callout critical to function characteristics to ensure consistently manufacturable components.
  • Own day‑to‑day Teamcenter activities for assigned content: structure and maintain BOMs, manage revisions, execute change management, and ensure data integrity.
  • Support senior/staff engineers on mechanical design of electronics packaging / housings / enclosures from concept through production release.
  • Design mechanical components such as castings, injection moldings, stampings, gaskets, PCBA mounting, vehicle interfaces and connector interfaces under guidance from lead engineers.
  • Prepare and run basic design checks (fit, clearance, stack‑ups), and coordinate with analysis teams on FEA, vibration, and thermal evaluations.
  • Contribute to DFM/DFx reviews with suppliers; incorporate feedback into CAD and drawings to improve manufacturability, quality, and cost.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers and PCB designers to integrate mechanical and electrical content into coherent electro‑mechanical systems.
  • Participate in design and vehicle packaging reviews, presenting CAD, drawing updates, and key risks to cross‑functional stakeholders.
  • Update CAD/drawings from build learnings, track design changes in Teamcenter, and document issues.
  • Follow and help improve CCH mechanical design standards, templates, and best practices for NX modeling and Teamcenter usage.
  • Support physical prototype builds, including machined and 3D-printed prototype parts, test fixtures and apparatus for testing.
  • Participate directly in in-house engineering verification testing, including test setup, execution support, and documentation of mechanical findings back into design updates.
