About The Position

The Senior Mechanic provides senior-level mechanical experience in installing, repairing, and maintaining stationary plant equipment, vehicles, and heavy automotive equipment. The role performs skilled maintenance, inspections, and repairs on automotive systems and equipment, and may also maintain facilities, plants, and other equipment. It diagnoses equipment problems and carries out repairs, replacements, fabrications, modifications, and installations to support continuous operation of City mechanical and plant facilities. The Senior Mechanic conducts state-mandated inspections, researches parts and repair options, assists with emergency towing and accident-related needs, and documents work through job tickets, work orders, and maintenance records. The position coordinates with employees, City divisions and departments, and parts vendors; trains and assists other mechanics; and follows proper work methods and safety procedures. Other work may be assigned as needed. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, or equivalent work experience, and four years of automotive or truck repair experience. An associate's degree in automotive technology plus two years of the required experience may satisfy the education and experience requirements. A valid driver's license with a good driving record is required, and the employee must supply their own set of mechanic's hand tools. The starting salary range is $25.87–$30.04, with the amount offered depending on qualifications.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent work experience.
Four years of experience in automotive or truck repair.
An associate's degree in automotive technology plus two years of the required experience may meet the education and experience requirements.
Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
Must supply a personal set of mechanic's hand tools.
Knowledge of mechanical principles, methods, procedures, and tool use.
Knowledge of hand, pneumatic, and electric tools used in automotive repair.
Ability to diagnose and plan repairs for a wide variety of automotive and diesel mechanical problems.
Knowledge of state, local, and engineering specifications and regulations.
Ability to read and understand automotive and mechanical repair manuals.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
Ability to lead and train other mechanics.
Ability to complete apprenticeship training for equipment maintenance and repair.
Ability to establish and maintain strong and effective relationships.

Responsibilities

Perform skilled maintenance, inspections, and repairs on fuel, ignition, electrical, braking, and other automotive and power-tool systems; may also maintain facilities, plants, and other equipment.
Diagnose, troubleshoot, and determine maintenance and repair needs across City locations and facilities.
Inspect and perform repairs, replacements, fabrications, modifications, and installations on equipment, including pumps, valves, chemical-handling equipment, and related plant equipment.
Perform state-mandated inspections and inspect equipment, automotive, and facility work.
Research parts and equipment to determine appropriate repair and maintenance actions.
Assist with emergency towing and accident occurrences; tow vehicles and equipment for repair and maintenance.
Complete job tickets, work orders, and records documenting work performed, time, repairs, parts, and preventive maintenance.
Drive a wrecker to work sites or field locations to repair or retrieve City vehicles or equipment.
Communicate and coordinate with employees, divisions, other City departments, and parts vendors to arrange repairs and obtain materials.
Train and educate other mechanics, demonstrate repair methods and safety procedures, and assist with complex repairs.
Perform other work as needed or assigned.
