About The Position

Arcadis is seeking a Senior Marine Structures Engineer to serve as the technical authority for marine and coastal structures within their construction supervision team in Vancouver. This role is ideal for a specialist with a career focused on waterfront and in-water structures, who is prepared to take professional responsibility for the work during its construction phase. This is a full-time, field-based position where the engineer will support the site team during Engineering Services During Construction (ESDC). The scope includes overseeing the construction of various marine works from design completion through installation, testing, and final certification. Specific structures include quay walls, wharves, jetties, dolphins, marine piling, sheet pile and combi wall systems, revetments, breakwaters, scour protection, cofferdams, marine access structures, and associated temporary works. The position requires the engineer to act as the Engineer of Record for the marine structures under supervision, conducting and documenting field reviews, assessing deviations from the design basis, and certifying that the constructed works substantially conform to the design. This is not a design office role and does not involve structural analysis or modeling software; instead, it requires the judgment to assess a marine structure during its construction and form sound engineering opinions.

Requirements

  • Minimum 15 years of engineering experience with a clear specialization in marine, coastal, and waterfront structures on ports, terminals, harbours, or heavy civil marine projects.
  • Substantial site-based construction supervision experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with EGBC, or eligibility for registration (registration expected before mobilization for candidates carrying Engineer of Record duties).
  • Demonstrated experience acting as, or supporting, the Engineer of Record for marine structures during construction, including documented field reviews and certification of substantial conformance.
  • Demonstrated construction supervision experience across quay walls, wharves, jetties, marine piling, breakwaters, revetments, and scour protection.
  • Working knowledge of codes and guidance for marine works in Canada and internationally, including CSA S6, CSA S16, CSA A23.1, BS 6349, and PIANC guidance.
  • Practical understanding of marine construction methods and marine plant (barges, jack-up platforms, cranes, hammers, dredgers, survey vessels).
  • Understanding of tidal, wave, current, and ice loading considerations and their impact on construction sequencing along the British Columbia coast.
  • Awareness of federal and provincial environmental requirements affecting in-water work, including fisheries timing windows and turbidity control.
  • Ability to direct and interpret underwater inspection, marine survey, and instrumentation output during construction.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical positions to non-specialist stakeholders.
  • Willingness to be based full-time on site and work from marine plant and vessels, including outside standard hours and within tidal windows.
  • Valid driving license.
  • Site and marine safety certification required for site and vessel access.

Nice To Haves

  • A postgraduate qualification in coastal, maritime, or structural engineering is an asset.
  • Equivalent international registration such as CEng MICE or CPEng is well regarded.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the Engineer of Record for the marine structures under supervision.
  • Set and execute the field review program for marine works, documenting each review, applying professional seals where necessary, and certifying substantial conformance with design documents and applicable codes.
  • Assess the effect of any departures from the design basis on capacity, durability, and service life, and define a clear engineering position on acceptance, repair, or replacement.
  • Review contractor submissions, including piling method statements, driveability assessments, pile driving records, welding and coating procedures, concrete placement methods, lifting plans, temporary works designs, and marine spread arrangements, ensuring consistency with design assumptions.
  • Attend and witness marine construction activities such as pile installation, tolerance verification, underwater placement, backfilling, armour and filter layer placement, and scour protection installation.
  • Confirm hold points, release work for cover, and meticulously record observations.
  • Interpret geotechnical, survey, and bathymetric information, compare it against the design basis, and advise on the treatment of variable seabed conditions, obstructions, over-dredge, and unexpected materials.
  • Review dredging and backfill records against design profiles and support the resolution of resulting changes.
  • Provide technical direction on marine durability aspects, including cathodic protection, coating systems, concrete cover, mix design, and corrosion allowances for steel elements.
  • Support the assessment of berthing and mooring arrangements, fender, and bollard installation and load testing.
  • Support underwater inspection planning, direct dive teams on inspection tasks, and review dive and survey reports against acceptance criteria.
  • Contribute to the non-conformance process for marine works.
  • Support the engineering assessment of claims related to marine conditions, weather downtime, or seabed variability.
  • Mentor engineers developing their marine experience on site.
