About The Position

TMMG is seeking an experienced Pipe Designer to support Eastern Shipbuilding Group’s engineering and vessel construction programs. This position will support the development, review, routing, modeling, and production readiness of marine piping systems in a shipyard engineering environment. The Pipe Designer will work closely with mechanical engineers, design supervisors, production teams, and other disciplines to develop accurate, buildable, and field-ready piping design products. The role requires strong 2D/3D design capability, practical shipyard judgment, and the ability to route multiple piping systems in congested vessel spaces while accounting for access, supports, insulation, valves, equipment, structural interferences, and production installation requirements.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of marine piping design experience.
  • Strong experience routing shipboard piping systems in confined spaces.
  • Working knowledge of marine piping systems, supports, hangers, insulation, valve access, and shipboard installation practices.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Extensive experience with 3D marine design software such as ShipConstructor, CATIA, FORAN, or similar.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical procedures, specifications, government regulations, class rules, vendor data, and production drawings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced shipyard engineering environment with attention to detail.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required.
  • Background check, US Citizenship, and drug screening are requirements for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical degree or marine design training preferred.
  • Familiarity with ABS, ABS NVR/SVR, DNV, USCG, API, AISC, ASTM, ISO, and MIL standards preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Review outsourced and internal design packages against vessel specifications, class rules, regulatory requirements, and shipyard standards.
  • Develop and support detailed marine piping system routing in 3D.
  • Prepare piping arrangements, spool details, support details, isometrics, plan views, sections, elevations, and production drawings.
  • Coordinate piping design with structural, mechanical, HVAC, electrical, outfitting, and machinery arrangement requirements.
  • Verify valve access, maintainability, insulation clearances, support locations, and installation feasibility.
  • Support production teams during construction, including field questions, ship checks, redlines, as-built verification, and design updates.
  • Review vendor data, equipment arrangements, structural drawings, machinery layouts, and production packages.
  • Develop bills of material, material takeoffs, drawing notes, and design package inputs.
  • Work with engineers and design leadership to resolve technical issues and maintain alignment with contractual and program requirements.
  • Mentor junior designers when needed and help improve drawing quality, production readiness, and design consistency.
