Sr. Manufacturing Mechanical Engineer

ClarkDietrich•Dallas, TX

About The Position

The Senior Manufacturing Mechanical Engineer designs, installs, commissions, troubleshoots, and continuously improves manufacturing equipment, machinery, and production processes, with an emphasis on metal-forming operations. The position combines office-based engineering and AutoCAD drafting with hands-on work in manufacturing facilities and production areas. The engineer develops facility and equipment layouts, machine components, and installation and fabrication drawings; designs and troubleshoots hydraulic and pneumatic systems; supports metal-forming equipment and processes; and investigates production issues. The role works with manufacturing, maintenance, operations, contractors, equipment suppliers, and customers to improve equipment reliability, production efficiency, product quality, and workplace safety. The engineer supports projects from initial design through installation and production startup, and may travel up to 75% of working time depending on project requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related discipline; equivalent practical experience may be considered.
  • Typically seven or more years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, industrial equipment, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD for mechanical drawings, facility layouts, and equipment documentation.
  • Strong working knowledge of industrial hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including design, modification, schematic interpretation, and troubleshooting.
  • Practical experience with metal-forming equipment and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and production-related problems.
  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing machinery, mechanical assemblies, equipment installation, or industrial commissioning.
  • Ability to develop practical engineering solutions that improve equipment performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 75% of working time; the physical demands section also states availability to travel 75% or more.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet applicable company travel requirements.
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong understanding of machine design, mechanical assemblies, and industrial equipment.
  • Ability to carry projects from concept through installation, startup, and production readiness; work effectively with manufacturing personnel, maintenance teams, management, contractors, and customers; make sound technical decisions with limited supervision; and adapt between office design work and hands-on field assignments.
  • Physical demands include occasional lifting of up to 40 lbs; standing more than 8 hours per day; intermittent walking for 4–6 hours per day; squatting, bending, extending arms, stooping, and reaching overhead; grasping with both hands for up to 8 hours per day; occasional pushing and climbing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with hydraulic presses, mechanical presses, stamping equipment, forming machinery, or similar industrial equipment.
  • Experience sizing hydraulic cylinders, pumps, valves, and related components based on operating pressure, flow, force, and cycle requirements.
  • Experience designing or modifying pneumatic circuits, actuators, valves, regulators, and air-preparation systems.
  • Ability to read and develop hydraulic and pneumatic schematics.
  • Experience with industrial machinery installation, equipment relocation, startup, and commissioning.
  • Familiarity with machine guarding, safety interlocks, hazardous-energy control, and industrial equipment safety practices.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling or additional mechanical design software.
  • Experience coordinating contractors, suppliers, installation teams, and customer-site activities.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, root-cause analysis, preventive maintenance, and continuous improvement methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Create, modify, and maintain mechanical drawings using AutoCAD, including facility layouts, production floor plans, equipment layouts, and production line configurations.
  • Design and detail machine components, assemblies, equipment modifications, supporting structures, installation drawings, and fabrication documentation.
  • Conduct field measurements and site assessments; evaluate existing machinery and facilities for functionality, safety, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Design, modify, interpret schematics for, and troubleshoot industrial hydraulic and pneumatic systems; select and size system components and optimize circuits.
  • Apply metal-forming process knowledge to support stamping, pressing, forming, bending, shearing, and other applicable operations.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and process problems affecting performance, cycle times, repeatability, product quality, and reliability; identify root causes and corrective actions.
  • Travel to manufacturing facilities and customer locations to support equipment installation, modification, integration, startup, commissioning, testing, and production qualification.
  • Coordinate and provide hands-on technical guidance to contractors, installation personnel, maintenance teams, and project stakeholders; verify installation against drawings and specifications.
  • Investigate mechanical failures and production interruptions, respond to urgent issues, and implement measures to reduce downtime and recurring failures.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives in productivity, quality, safety, reliability, and operating costs.
  • Support engineering projects from concept through design, installation, startup, and acceptance; develop scopes of work, specifications, installation plans, and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, and customer representatives; communicate project status, technical findings, risks, and design changes.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship as appropriate, and maintain accurate engineering drawings, revision records, installation records, and equipment documentation.
  • Follow company safety procedures, site requirements, and applicable standards; incorporate guarding and safe maintenance practices into designs and follow lockout/tagout and hazardous-energy-control procedures.
