About The Position

This role is the senior technical authority for machine safety, equipment safety, and occupational safety across San Diego and Korea Factory (KF) operations. The position provides expert guidance on hazard identification, risk assessment, safeguarding strategies, equipment compliance, and application of safety standards throughout the equipment lifecycle. Working with minimum supervision, the Manufacturing Senior Equipment Safety Engineer sets the technical standard that other safety engineers work to, serves as the escalation point for the most complex safety and compliance challenges, and mentors and develops junior safety staff. They collaborate with stakeholders to proactively identify and mitigate risk, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and ensures compliance to all applicable regulatory and corporate standards while building the capability of the team around them.

Requirements

  • Recognized technical expert in machine safety and equipment safety engineering with strong knowledge of product safety principles, machinery risk assessment, safeguarding technologies, and application of technical safety regulations and standards.
  • Bachelor of Science or higher in Occupational Safety and Health, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of directly related safety experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting, with demonstrated ability to work independently and with minimum supervision.
  • Semiconductor, machinery or capital equipment experience preferred.
  • Track record of mentoring or formally developing other safety professionals.
  • Expertise in machine safety and functional safety standards (SEMI S2/S8/S10/S22, ISO 12100, ISO 13849-1, IEC 60204-1, NFPA 79, UL 61010-1) and NRTL processes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in hazard identification, risk assessments, and safety engineering methodologies including HAZOP, Safety Risk Assessment, EMT, design reviews) and complex incident investigations.
  • Effective communication and the ability to convey safety expectations to technicians, engineers, and executives, and to teach the same to junior staff.
  • Comfort operating across time zones with global teams and different cultures.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certification preferred at this level: CSP, CMSE, TUV Functional Safety Engineer, or equivalent.
  • Korean language a plus, not required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior technical safety authority for the San Diego and KF safety engineering team.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop junior and mid-level safety engineers, including formal on-the-job training, technical review of their work, and growth planning.
  • Establish the technical standard for risk assessments, compliance documents, and inspections that the broader team executes against.
  • May represent the safety function in front of regulators, NRTLs, corporate EHS, auditors, and customers as a senior technical expert.
  • Direct collaboration with engineering, factory operations (KF included), and facilities to identify, assess, and mitigate safety risks across all domains.
  • Act as the lead technical safety competence resource for the Factory.
  • Own the safety and compliance requirement documents, and translate requirements into guidelines that engineers and others follow.
  • Set and drive the technical strategy behind the Factory's safety and compliance roadmaps, working through the manufacturing and DE teams.
  • Lead technical manufacturing risk assessments (CDR, SRA, HAZOP, etc.) and direct incident investigations for manufacturing and facilities safety events.
  • Own root cause analysis methodology and verify corrective action effectiveness.
  • Serve as the SME for machine safety and equipment safety principles confirming that standard manufacturing procedures, engineering testing, and lab procedures are reviewed for machine and human safety, with appropriate measures implemented.
  • Lead process safety audits and equipment and tooling inspections.
  • Apply Safety by Design concepts to manufacturing tools, test equipment, automated systems and lab equipment.
  • Ensure equipment and tooling comply with relevant safety standards (e.g., NRTL, SEMI).
  • Serve as the final resolution point for equipment and tooling safety and compliance escalations.
  • Drive safety compliance for manufacturing testing tools, test rigs, lab spaces, and related work areas.
  • Establish and maintain the safety level expectations for test and lab environments, and verify that controls are in place before tools and rigs are put into use.
  • Partner with manufacturing, test, and lab owners to close gaps identified against those expectations.
  • Champion a proactive, solution-oriented safety culture across sites.
  • Develop and deliver toolbox talks, safety communications, and training on equipment and tooling safety, and equip junior engineers to deliver the same.
  • Analyze safety indicators, identify trends, and set the direction for continuous improvement.
  • Standardize best practices and lessons learned across San Diego and KF.
  • Lead EHS initiatives and projects as assigned.
  • Chair or sit as a senior member on cross-functional safety committees and improvement projects.
  • Program owner for assigned EHS programs (Laser Safety, Electrical Safety, etc.).
