About The Position

As part of the talented Harris Fort Wayne team, you will play a key role in sustaining and advancing the welding and fabrication processes that power Harris Pontoon Boats. In this role, you’ll bring expertise in metallurgy and failure analysis to support the performance and durability of aluminum boat chassis, while also helping drive innovation through the implementation of automated weld cells. You’ll partner closely with cross-functional teams to solve problems, improve processes, and support ongoing growth and expansion.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of technical experience working in a fabrication engineering department
  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering (WE), Welding Engineering Technology (WET), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET), or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Must have strong technical expertise in welding processes, welding equipment and welding recipe development including metallurgy (preferably aluminum)
  • Programming experience with weld robots and other types of automation
  • Strong computer skills including MS-Office (specifically strong Excel skills)
  • 3D CAD experience. SolidWorks preferred. Will use 3D models to program equipment and develop fixtures
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Demonstrated problem solving, innovation, team participation, and self-motivation

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Six Sigma Green Belt
  • Experience with lean six sigma and root cause determination tools such as DMAIC, 5-Why, 8-D, and 5S
  • Demonstrated use of PFMEA to be proactive in improving manufacturing processes
  • Experience leading Kaizen events

Responsibilities

  • Provide production support to the manufacturing team.
  • Assist with evaluating and resolving safety, quality, delivery, and productivity issues
  • Provide technical support for fabrication equipment such as manual welders, robotic welders, sheet rollers, and other custom equipment used to fabricate aluminum pontoon boat chassis
  • Identify, design and implement new fixtures and tools to improve quality, reduce scrap, and improve throughput
  • Analyze throughput of production lines and implement improvements using time studies, line balancing, and other lean manufacturing methods
  • Create and maintain process documentation including work instructions and labor standards
  • Participate in the new product development (NPD) process to ensure the product design incorporates design for manufacturability (DFM)
  • Lead manufacturing readiness activities in preparation for new product introduction (NPI)
  • Participate in capital projects from cost justification through implementation
  • Act as a liaison between production team, design team, and other departments
  • Communicate effectively to management, peers, operators, and conduct training as needed
