About The Position

As a Senior Manager of Software Engineering within UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual Technology, you will serve as the Technology Leader for an external-facing portal application. You will direct an engineering team of 10–16 software developers to design, build, and deliver key features on time, with high quality, and within budget. In this role, you will apply design thinking to architect reusable, modular solutions, support teams on their transformation journey from traditional Scrum teams to AI Development Life Cycle (AI DLC) pods, and drive the enterprise AI agenda to modernize digital assets and deliver superior digital experiences that elevate constituent NPS. You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience developing web applications or enterprise digital portals
  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering and coding with Java, Spring, Spring Boot, and modern web frameworks (Angular/React)
  • 4+ years of experience with software design and architecture patterns
  • 2+ years of experience designing and deploying cloud-native applications
  • 2+ years of experience leading, managing, or directing engineering teams
  • 2+ years of experience with DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices
  • Hands-on experience designing or building solutions using machine learning models and/or Generative AI

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline
  • Experience as a full-stack developer or enterprise architect
  • Hands-on experience with microservices architecture and CI/CD delivery pipelines
  • Experience with Adobe Experience Manager (AEM)
  • Background in healthcare technology or working with sensitive/regulated data
  • Proven expertise with Agile software delivery frameworks (Scrum and/or Kanban)
  • Proven solid cross-functional management and executive-level communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Direct a team of 10–16 engineers to deliver high-quality web portal features according to committed backlogs, timelines, and budgets
  • Serve as the Technology Leader for external-facing portal applications, applying design thinking to drive architecture decisions and reusable modular solutions
  • Support and guide engineering teams on their transformation journey from traditional Scrum teams to AI Development Life Cycle (AI DLC) pods
  • Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered solutions to address complex business challenges while ensuring responsible and ethical AI practices
  • Champion AI adoption across the team, establishing AI integration goals, leveraging productivity tools, and fostering continuous innovation
  • Balance stakeholder expectations, market research, program objectives, and technology strategy to optimize user experience and drive constituent NPS
  • Oversee security MBOs, tech debt reduction, and DevOps/SRE best practices to accelerate delivery efficiency and maintain platform stability
  • Mentor, coach, and develop engineering talent, providing technical guidance, resolving roadblocks, and fostering a high-performing team culture
  • Communicate effectively across cross-functional teams to align priorities, manage dependencies, and escalate strategic risks to leadership
