About The Position

The Senior Manager, Power Generation Engineering provides strategic technical leadership and operational oversight for power generation engineering programs across the organization. This role is responsible for directing engineering teams in the design, analysis, optimization, and lifecycle management of generation assets — including thermal, combined-cycle, hydroelectric, and renewable generation facilities. The Senior Manager ensures engineering excellence, regulatory compliance, and safe, reliable power delivery while driving continuous improvement initiatives and capital project execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related Power Engineering discipline required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive engineering experience in electric power generation or utility-scale energy systems.
  • Minimum 4 years in a supervisory or engineering management role with direct reports.
  • Demonstrated experience managing capital projects with budgets in excess of $10M.
  • Hands-on experience with thermal generation cycles, rotating machinery, high-voltage electrical systems, and generation protection and control systems.
  • Proven track record of leading RCA investigations and implementing effective corrective actions.
  • Deep knowledge of power plant thermodynamics, electrical systems (up to 500kV), and generation interconnection requirements.
  • Proficiency with power systems modeling and analysis tools (e.g., PSS/E, ETAP, SKM Power Tools, PSCAD).
  • Familiarity with turbine OEM technical guidance (GE, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Pratt & Whitney, Voith).
  • Working knowledge of NERC Reliability Standards applicable to generation owners and operators.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam Revu, and engineering document management systems.
  • Proficiency with applicable codes and standards: ASME, IEEE, NFPA 70/850, ANSI, IEC.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Business Administration (MBA), or Energy Systems preferred.
  • NERC System Operator Certification preferred.
  • PMP certification or equivalent project management credential preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of professional engineers (PEs), engineers-in-training (EITs), and technical specialists across generation disciplines.
  • Establish engineering priorities, workload assignments, and performance goals aligned with departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Foster a culture of technical rigor, safety, and continuous improvement within the engineering function.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, support career development planning, and identify training needs.
  • Provide technical oversight for the engineering design, analysis, and condition assessment of generation assets including gas turbines, steam turbines, boilers, generators, transformers, and associated BOP equipment.
  • Direct long-range capital planning and asset lifecycle management programs, including major overhauls, equipment replacements, and reliability upgrades.
  • Oversee root cause analysis (RCA) investigations for significant equipment failures or forced outages and ensure corrective actions are effectively implemented.
  • Manage technical evaluations for plant modifications, uprates, and technology upgrades.
  • Serve as technical owner for major capital projects, directing engineering scope development, contractor selection, and construction oversight.
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables including design specifications, equipment data sheets, single-line diagrams, P&IDs, and construction drawings.
  • Coordinate with project management teams to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery within defined quality standards.
  • Manage engineering change control processes and ensure design basis documentation is maintained.
  • Ensure engineering work products comply with applicable codes, standards, and regulations including NERC, FERC, EPA, OSHA, NEC, NFPA, and IEEE.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies, independent system operators (ISOs), and reliability coordinators on technical matters.
  • Support environmental permitting activities and emissions compliance programs affecting generation equipment.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving regulatory requirements and proactively update engineering practices accordingly.
  • Drive plant availability and capacity factor improvements through data-driven engineering analysis and predictive maintenance strategies.
  • Utilize power plant performance monitoring tools and thermodynamic modeling to identify efficiency degradation and optimization opportunities.
  • Champion the integration of advanced monitoring, diagnostics, and digital engineering tools across generation assets.
  • Lead or support NERC reliability standards compliance programs including MOD, PRC, and FAC families.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Maintenance, Environmental, Finance, and Legal departments to align engineering solutions with business needs.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, business cases, and capital investment justifications to senior leadership.
  • Represent the organization in external technical forums, industry working groups, and OEM technical advisory councils.
  • Interface with equipment vendors and EPC contractors on technical warranties, service agreements, and performance guarantees.
