About The Position

The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) aims to eliminate racial and other inequities that lead to premature mortality. CHECW operates with a deep understanding of historical and structural factors, highlighting the harm caused by centuries of unjust policies and advocating for redress for impacted New York City communities. The center collaborates with community, faith-based, and healthcare organizations to address health inequities across various systems, focusing on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial factors. CHECW comprises several bureaus, including those focused on neighborhood health in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens, chronic disease prevention, equitable health systems, and finance and administrative services. The Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agency's Chief Equity Officer, overseeing the 'Race to Justice' initiative. This internal reform effort, launched in 2016, aims to build the Health Department's capacity to address structural racism and health inequities by promoting anti-racism and embedding racial equity and social justice into policies, processes, and programs. The initiative seeks to transform the department by increasing staff awareness of institutional oppression, developing skills to address health inequities, examining the impact of structural racism on departmental work, and implementing policies to mitigate these impacts.
