Senior Manager, New Glenn Product Configuration

BLUE ORIGIN•West Melbourne, FL
•$183,807 - $257,329

About The Position

At Blue Origin, the mission is to enable millions of people to live and work in space for the benefit of Earth. This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle designed to carry people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar space, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed to be human-capable. The Senior Manager leads the New Glenn Vehicle Product Configuration team, working across configuration management, systems engineering, production, and vehicle operations. The role ensures product configuration and engineering requirements are managed and implemented throughout the vehicle lifecycle, including for both hardware and software systems. As a discipline lead, the position owns configuration policies, processes, tools, and training; maintains configuration management rigor across the product lifecycle; and partners with engineering, quality, and Safety and Mission Assurance to establish and sustain product configuration baselines. The position manages and develops a team of Configuration and Development Engineers and works with cross-functional teams to embed configuration management practices in program activities. It defines and improves program configuration processes, supports reviews and audits, manages configuration status and product structures, and drives resolution of configuration and requirement-implementation issues across manufacturing, testing, launch, and vehicle operations. Up to 15% travel is required to coordinate with design, test, and manufacturing teams.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in engineering or a B.S./B.A. in another technical field.
  • At least 8 years of experience in design, development, integration, configuration management, or testing, preferably involving aerospace hardware or complex technical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience applying configuration management principles and practices to complex hardware and/or software products.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational and coordination skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusting, effective working relationships that improve team performance and deliver results.
  • Experience leading teams on fast-paced projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 15% to coordinate with design, test, and manufacturing teams.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident/current Green Card holder, or otherwise meet the employment eligibility stated in the posting's export-control section.

  • Experience with structures, mechanical systems, cryogenic fluids, and avionics systems in a design and/or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience developing product structures, manufacturing installation plans, work instructions, and/or test plans or procedures for structural parts, fluid components and tubes, feedlines, engines, harnesses, and sensors on assemblies and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, design for manufacturing and testing, lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and quality control processes.
  • Experience using Manufacturing Execution Systems/software and processes.
  • Experience with data analytics software and methods such as SQL, Alteryx, or Power BI.
  • Experience with engineering drawings and GD&T methods per ASME Y14.5.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage Configuration and Development Engineers, including hiring, performance reviews, compensation management, and career development.
  • Recruit, hire, and mentor a team; embody, promote, and coach Blue Origin Leadership Principles.
  • Partner with engineering, manufacturing, software quality assurance, and Safety and Mission Assurance teams to embed configuration management best practices throughout program activities.

  • Define and manage program-level Product Configuration policies and processes and their tailoring while maintaining compliance with company procedures.
  • Contribute to design, test, and production readiness milestone reviews, ensuring configuration management considerations are addressed and documented.
  • Establish and report product configuration management metrics and status to program leadership.
  • Work independently toward long-range objectives and determine approaches to solutions without appreciable direction.
  • Work with Enterprise Technology to define, develop, and implement automation for Product Configuration processes and tools.
  • Coordinate the team in maintaining complex design, production, and in-operation product structures for integrated New Glenn Launch Vehicle modules.
  • Own configuration status accounting and provide accurate, timely visibility into product configuration and change implementation status.
  • Provide configuration evidence for customer certification and audits, including NSSL and NASA, and resolve related findings.
  • Guide implementation of product variant and effectivity methodologies across New Glenn product structures.
  • Support technical inquiries from U.S. Government partners, including DCR, TIM, and joint handling plan resolution on product configuration topics.
  • Manage per-vehicle configuration through reflight and refurbishment of reusable hardware.
  • Ensure software configuration item effectivity is identified, baselined, and controlled alongside hardware.
  • Interpret manufacturing build and test flows and provide guidance on sequencing based on configuration requirements.
  • Partner with design teams and integrated testing functions to interpret and coordinate requirements implementation within product structures.
  • Partner with production teams to interpret and execute build-to-program requirements.
  • Provide configuration compliance input to vehicle and launch readiness reviews.
  • Support manufacturing, launch, and quality engineers in generating reconciliation records for key production milestones and vehicle events; develop and implement process improvements supporting reconciliation objectives.
  • Drive resolution of complex requirement-implementation issues in production systems, favoring scalable solutions over one-off workarounds.
  • Identify critical product changes and support effectivity discussions and implementation; resolve constraints and develop recovery strategies when planned effectivity cannot be implemented.
  • Serve as a technical expert on product configuration used in manufacturing, testing, and operation of integrated products.
