About The Position

The Senior Manager, Flight Operations Training & Scheduling is responsible for balancing strategic priorities with tactical execution for pilot training and scheduling operations across Alaska Airlines’ Flight Operations. As a people leader, the Senior Manager, Flight Operations Training and Scheduling leads and establishes priorities for multiple teams and subordinate leaders to oversee pilot training schedules, capacity planning, and resource alignment, ensuring training across all fleets and locations is executed efficiently, safely, and in full compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) provisions, while supporting Alaska Airlines' growth objectives.

Requirements

  • 7 years of experience in flight operations, pilot training, crew planning/scheduling, or a closely related field, demonstrating increasing responsibility and complex operational management.
  • 4 years of leadership experience, with at least some of this experience directly leading people.
  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in business administration or a related area, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
  • Strong knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) related to flight crew training and experience with labor agreements or union work rules (e.g., pilot CBAs) in an airline or similar regulated environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to create collaborative relationships that drive outcomes in the best interest of the company, with others in the organization, and key external business partners.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Detailed-oriented and highly organized, with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) to enhance both customer and employee satisfaction.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • Airline or aviation industry experience, particularly in pilot training administration, crew scheduling, or flight operations.
  • Experience leading multiple teams or managing other leaders (people managers) in an operations or training environment.
  • Familiarity with pilot training management systems and scheduling software (e.g., Flight Training Management Systems, AIMS Training Management System (ATMS), MINT, Qualtrax, Jeppesen or similar tools).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of pilot training and qualification programs, airline training manuals, and experience integrating Safety Management System (SMS) principles into operational processes.
  • Strong understanding of pilot collective bargaining agreements, and experience collaborating with labor/union representatives on scheduling or training issues.
  • Ability to develop new ideas to improve safety, compliance, efficiency, and cost.

Responsibilities

  • Shapes and drives the 12+ month strategy for pilot training scheduling and resource utilization across all fleets and training programs, translating long-range organizational goals into actionable training capacity plans.
  • Balances strategic priorities with day-to-day operational execution to meet current and future pilot qualification and staffing needs.
  • Oversees and optimizes pilot training capacity and resources (simulators, training devices, instructor staffing, and classroom facilities), ensuring maximum utilization and efficiency.
  • Forecasts long-range training demand (new hire, recurrent, upgrade training, etc.) in alignment with pilot growth, attrition, and base expansion to support Alaska Airlines’ strategic fleet and network plans.
  • Ensures all training scheduling and execution adhere to FAA regulatory (FAR) requirements and pilot collective bargaining agreement (CBA) provisions, maintaining full compliance and audit readiness.
  • Partners with Safety and Regulatory Compliance teams to incorporate Safety Management System (SMS) and Safety Risk Management principles into training scheduling processes.
  • Leads continuous improvement initiatives to enhance training scheduling systems, processes, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Drives creative problem-solving and data-driven decision-making to streamline complex scheduling challenges, improve on-time training completion rates, and support cost-effective training operations.
  • Collaborates with and influences across multiple divisions — including Flight Operations leadership (e.g., Chief Pilots, Fleet Captains), Network & Capacity Planning, Finance, Inflight, and Crew Scheduling — to synchronize training plans with operational requirements and ensure enterprise-wide alignment.
  • Provides expert insight and recommendations on training capacity and scheduling to inform Flight Operations strategy, labor negotiations, budgeting, and long-term planning.
  • Leads and mentors a multi-disciplinary team, including subordinate managers and senior professionals, in delivering a high-performing, customer-focused training scheduling function. Develops team members through effective performance management, coaching, and feedback, with an emphasis on building strategic and systems thinking capabilities, developing talent within the function, and ensuring robust succession planning for critical roles.
