Senior Manager, Developer Advocacy (NAMER)

Temporal Technologies
•$198,000 - $325,000

About The Position

Temporal is hiring a Senior Manager to build and lead its Developer Advocacy team in North America. The role focuses on how developers first learn about Temporal and are encouraged to take their first steps with the product. The manager will lead a team of senior advocates while remaining hands-on with activities such as giving talks, writing code, and attending meetups. The role also has input into the events, communities, and programs the team prioritizes, and connects developer feedback directly with Product and Engineering. The preferred location is the San Francisco Bay Area. Candidates based elsewhere in the United States may work remotely, with frequent travel to the Bay Area expected. The role also requires approximately 30–40% travel to support events, community, and team activities. Temporal Technologies is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are based on qualifications, merit, and business need. The company embraces and celebrates differences and diversity, and provides access, equal opportunity, and reasonable accommodation for individuals with disabilities.

Requirements

  • Experience as a working software engineer who owned production systems, including being on call when they failed.
  • Senior-level developer advocacy experience as a Principal or Senior Staff individual contributor or as a manager, with credibility in technical communities.
  • People management experience, or principal-level leadership such as mentoring advocates or engineers and leading programs across a team, together with a clear desire to pursue management.
  • A record of producing technical content developers watch or read, such as a YouTube channel, popular talk, or widely shared blog.
  • Ability to teach complex distributed-systems concepts clearly on stage, in workshops, or one-on-one.
  • Experience building programs that required buy-in from teams the candidate did not manage, and the ability to secure that buy-in.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 30–40% to support events, community, and team activities.
  • For US-remote candidates, willingness to travel frequently to the Bay Area.

Nice To Haves

  • Active open-source involvement as a maintainer, regular contributor, or community organizer.
  • Experience with distributed systems or workflow orchestration; experience with Temporal is a strong plus.
  • Experience building developer workshops or training programs, or managing a large event calendar.
  • Experience working with Product Marketing to shape the positioning and messaging of a technical product.
  • Deep, active connections in the Bay Area developer community and an intuitive understanding of the broader developer ecosystem and its platforms and communities.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of Developer Advocates by setting explicit goals and expectations and giving honest feedback.
  • Co-develop talks, review demos, pair on content, and help each advocate develop their stage presence and voice.
  • Build the team’s operating cadence, including planning, event coverage, content pipelines, and quality standards.
  • Set the strategy for building awareness and consideration of Temporal among developers in North America, prioritizing third-party channels such as community meetups, partner events, conferences, and open-source projects.
  • Grow Temporal’s online developer audience by investing in engaging content and selecting formats and channels for the team to prioritize.
  • Plan Temporal’s in-person presence across North America, balancing company events with partnerships and sustained participation in important communities.
  • Develop and deliver use-case narratives, demos, and practical experiences that demonstrate durable execution, with clear program success metrics such as attendee engagement, knowledge retention, and increases in developer adoption and usage.
  • Identify the tools, frameworks, and communities developers use with Temporal and determine which partnerships can reach new developers.
  • Build relationships with partner Developer Relations teams and community leaders, and co-create programs, content, and events.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Sales to align messaging, campaigns, and technical narratives with company priorities.
  • Define and report metrics connecting advocacy to adoption and product impact.
