About The Position

The Senior Manager, Data Science will lead work on the AI Foundations Specialist Models Data Science team, building and shipping scalable architecture and AI/ML solutions for Capital One’s mobile app. The role partners with product, technology, design, data science, software engineering, machine learning engineering, and product management teams to create customer-facing features and experiences using emerging generative AI technologies.

The position applies natural language processing and large language models to customer-facing applications, develops machine learning and NLP models through design, training, evaluation, and validation, and works with engineering teams to deploy models in scalable, resilient production systems serving more than 80 million customers. It also calls for translating technical work into business goals, leading and developing talent, evaluating emerging technologies, and delivering models and code at scale.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field plus 7 years of experience performing data analytics; or a master’s degree in a quantitative field or an MBA with a quantitative concentration plus 5 years of data analytics experience; or a PhD in a quantitative field plus 2 years of data analytics experience. The degree must be completed by the scheduled start date.
• At least 2 years of experience using open-source programming languages for large-scale data analysis.
• At least 2 years of experience working with machine learning.
• At least 2 years of experience using relational databases.
• Experience training language models or large computer vision models.
• Expertise in at least one key subdomain, such as training optimization, self-supervised learning, explainability, or RLHF.
• Hands-on experience with large language models and solutions using open-source tools and cloud computing platforms.
• An engineering mindset and a track record of delivering models at scale in training data and inference volumes.
• Experience delivering libraries, platforms, or solution-level code to existing products.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, including communicating technical findings to non-technical audiences and influencing cross-functional teams.

Nice To Haves

• PhD in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics).
• Experience working with AWS.
• At least 5 years of experience in Python, Scala, or R.
• At least 5 years of experience with machine learning.
• At least 5 years of experience with SQL.

Responsibilities

• Partner with cross-functional data science, software engineering, machine learning engineering, and product teams to deliver AI-powered customer products.
• Use technologies such as PyTorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Hugging Face, LangChain, Lightning, and vector databases to analyze numeric and textual data.
• Apply NLP and large language models to customer-facing applications and features, including adapting and fine-tuning models.
• Build machine learning and NLP models across design, training, evaluation, and validation phases.
• Partner with engineering teams to operationalize models in scalable, resilient production systems.
• Translate technical work and findings into tangible business goals and communicate them to non-technical audiences.
• Research and evaluate emerging technologies and identify opportunities to apply state-of-the-art methods.
• Challenge conventional thinking and work with stakeholders to improve existing approaches.
• Support talent development for the team and beyond.
• Deliver models at scale across training data and inference volumes, and contribute libraries, platforms, or solution-level code to existing products.
