About The Position

The Senior Manager - Bridge Load Rating Engineer will report to and collaborate with the Deputy Chief of Capital Delivery Bridge and Structures and the Bridge Inspection Unit Supervisor. This role is for an experienced structural/bridge engineer responsible for performing bridge load ratings, structural design, and other evaluations to determine live load capacities based on As-Inspected conditions. The work is crucial for assessing the need for load posting, rehabilitation, or bridge replacement, ensuring the safety of MBTA-owned and maintained bridges and ancillary structures for the traveling public. The Senior Manager will oversee junior staff and collaborate with various MBTA departments (procurement, legal, finance/accounting, capital delivery) and outside consultants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in civil or structural engineering discipline, or directly related engineering discipline.
  • Five (5) years of related experience in bridge engineering and bridge load rating.
  • Two (2) years of experience at the supervisory level.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (Structural or Civil) in Massachusetts or the ability to obtain a Mass. PE within six (6) months.
  • Effective organizational, analytical, quantitative, multitasking, and time management skills.
  • Proven history of collaboration, transparency, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization as needed.
  • Physical ability to perform field work year-round in adverse weather conditions and work around bridges, roads, rail, water, and tunnels.
  • Physical ability to carry ladders and gear, work at heights, and work in water with waders.
  • A current and valid Class D Motor Vehicles Operator’s license.
  • Availability to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Ability to effectively read, comprehend, communicate, and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English.
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Ability to commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
  • Ability to provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experiences.
  • Ability to work effectively, independently, and as part of a diverse workforce team (or supervise, if required).
  • Ability to uphold the rights and interests of the MBTA while building and maintaining effective relationships with employees and co-workers.

  • Have a satisfactory work record for the two (2) years immediately prior to the closing date of this posting.
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and / or medical Clinic screening, potentially including physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings.
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a related subject.
  • Experience working in the public sector construction projects and/or transit industry.
  • Experience as a bridge inspection Team Leader / Supervisor of bridge inspectors.
  • Experience with AASHTO, AREMA and MassDOT Bridge Load Rating codes and requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience with AASHTOWare Bridge Rating software.
  • Knowledge and experience with STAAD or other finite element structural analysis program.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite products.
  • OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety and Health.

Responsibilities

  • Stay current with industry standards, codes, and best practices related to bridge rating and maintenance.
  • Conduct structural analysis of highway, transit and commuter rail bridges and structures to determine load ratings for design, legal, and permit vehicles using available plans, inspection reports, and prior ratings.
  • Apply critical-thinking skills to develop engineering concepts and solutions.
  • Indirectly oversee support personnel (Inspection/Engineering Team Members) including Assistant Project Managers, Project Coordinators, Resident Engineers, Construction Inspectors and other administrative personnel as assigned.
  • Serve as primary contact on load rating tasks for projects, identify scheduling and staff resource requirements, and assign tasks to self and other staff members.
  • Perform quality control and/or quality assurance on bridge rating reports done by other engineers.
  • Assist the Deputy Chief of Capital Delivery Bridge and Structures and the Bridge Inspection Unit Supervisor in the scheduling of consultants to perform the load rating of MBTA bridges and structures.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to inspection/engineering activities and/or attend off-site meetings.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.
