About The Position

Sila is a next-generation battery materials company dedicated to powering the world’s transition to clean energy. The company engineers and manufactures ground-breaking battery materials that significantly increase the energy density of batteries, while reducing their size and weight, thereby enabling innovation in consumer devices and accelerating the mass adoption of electric cars to eliminate dependence on fossil fuels. The Senior Manager, Battery Engineering will lead a team focused on deploying Sila’s materials in the consumer, industrial, and automotive markets through qualification with cell suppliers and OEMs. This role requires an engineering leader with strong people and technical skills, acting as a “player-coach” to guide collaboration with internal technical and business teams, as well as external partners and customers. The manager will help the team set and achieve ambitious, realistic goals by building streamlined systems, setting clear responsibilities, empowering team members, and owning the team’s and Sila’s success.

Requirements

  • B.S. or higher in engineering or physical science and 12+ years of industry experience (fewer for candidates with an advanced degree), or related experience.
  • Understanding of lithium-ion batteries, components, and materials.
  • Experience leading customer- or partner-facing relationships.
  • Exceptional leadership and communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated advanced engineering and project management skills.
  • Passion for coaching and guiding coworkers through trust, openness, and dedication.

Responsibilities

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the team and portfolio.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.
  • Assumes administrative management responsibilities for the team.
  • Manages employees and contractors to support sales activities with key partners and gather competitive intelligence.
  • Drive the successful deployment of our technology with a variety of partners and work with subject matter experts to construct, communicate, direct, and execute technical goals and plans.
  • Coach and support engineers by providing consistent feedback, guidance through challenges, and development opportunities to encourage technical and professional growth.
  • Establish or improve upon systems for efficient and productive discussion of ideas, decision making, and information sharing.
  • Facilitate collaboration between groups (such as Product, Business Development, and R&D) at Sila and with external partners through direct communication, information review, and coaching.
