About The Position

The Senior Manager, AI/ML Applied Research leads a focused portfolio of high-priority applied AI and machine learning initiatives across Investments and Finance. The role works hands-on to translate consequential business and investment problems into scientifically rigorous, scalable AI capabilities that deliver business value through transition into production systems. The position sets scientific direction with senior leadership and personally develops and evaluates research hypotheses, model approaches, and experiments. It challenges methodological assumptions and empirical evidence throughout problem formulation, validation, and production transition. As a player-coach, the role leads and develops a small multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers, providing technical direction, collaborating on complex research problems, and establishing standards for research quality and professional development. The role also elevates standards for reproducibility, explainability, documentation, and model governance; partners with senior stakeholders to frame research questions and secure project alignment and resourcing; and presents technical findings, recommendations, and business implications to senior leaders. It contributes to the lab’s collaborative learning culture and connects business strategy, applied research, governance, and production engineering across the AI development lifecycle. Vanguard is not offering visa sponsorship for this position. Vanguard uses a hybrid working model for the majority of its crew members, combining flexibility with in-person learning, collaboration, and connection.
