About The Position

Amgen is seeking a Senior Maintenance Technician – Utilities (Waste Water Treatment) to join their newest and most advanced drug substance manufacturing plant. This role will provide technical expertise and guidance supporting the start-up of plant utilities and daily operations. The Senior Wastewater Treatment Operator/Mechanic is responsible for the operation, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of industrial wastewater treatment systems to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal discharge permit requirements. This position serves as a technical lead for wastewater treatment operations, laboratory testing, process control, preventive maintenance, equipment repairs, and operator training. The Senior Operator/Mechanic works independently to maintain treatment system performance, monitor permit compliance parameters, and perform mechanical and electrical maintenance on wastewater treatment equipment including pumps, mixers, chemical feed systems, Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems, instrumentation, controls, and associated utilities. The role also supports operations, maintenance, and repair activities on other utility equipment and systems serving Manufacturing, Lab, and various operations across the site, including steam, chilled water, compressed air, cooling tower water, and heating hot water. Specific Manufacturing and Lab utility systems include: clean steam, water for injection (WFI), process cooling water, process air, process gases, process waste, HVAC systems, walk-in cold rooms and freezers, and other environmental control units (chambers). Maintenance activities include: inspections, testing, minor/major equipment overhauls, pump rebuild/replacements, valve rebuild/replacements, HVAC troubleshooting/repair, piping modification/repair, etc. Additional responsibilities include partnering with maintenance service providers and equipment vendors. The role requires completing quality and safety documentation and work orders accurately and in a timely manner, aligning with GMPs, SOPs, and Amgen policies and regulations. Identifying waste, work-flow interrupters, and other opportunities for improvement, recommending solutions, and assisting with implementation is also part of the role. The technician will identify opportunities to learn new skills and participate in development to improve team performance, and represent the Utilities Maintenance team in discussions and meetings. This position requires on-call rotation, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma / GED and 6 years of Water Treatment Operations or Maintenance experience
  • 2 years in a Technical School setting with hands-on experience in Water Treatment Operations or Maintenance experience
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment operations and mechanical maintenance and ability to effectively perform associated maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems and ability to effectively perform associated maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge and experience within a cGMP or other highly regulated environment.
  • Experience executing and documenting maintenance work orders in a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Ability to interpret P&ID's.
  • Ability to work with minimum direction.
  • Ability to effectively communicate issues and status of tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to interact constructively with peers/teams.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years knowledge of wastewater treatment operations and mechanical maintenance and ability to effectively perform associated maintenance activities.
  • 3+ years knowledge of pneumatic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems and ability to effectively perform associated maintenance activities.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor industrial wastewater treatment processes including equalization, pH adjustment, chemical treatment, dissolved air flotation (DAF), sludge handling, and discharge systems.
  • Monitor wastewater flow, pH, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Nitrogen (TN), Ammonia Nitrogen (NH3-N), Total Phosphorus (TP), Chlorides, and other permit-regulated parameters.
  • Conduct routine inspections of treatment systems, tanks, pumps, valves, piping, instrumentation, and process equipment.
  • Evaluate treatment performance and make operational adjustments to maintain compliance with discharge permits.
  • Monitor SCADA, PLC, HMI, and automated control systems to ensure proper operation.
  • Respond to process alarms and emergency situations to prevent permit violations and operational disruptions.
  • Maintain accurate operational logs, inspection reports, and compliance documentation.
  • Follow all environmental, health, and safety regulations and company policies.
  • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Participate in confined space entry, lockout/tagout, chemical handling, and emergency response activities.
  • Maintain compliance with wastewater discharge permits and environmental regulations.
  • Perform operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, testing and documentation/logs of site wastewater treatment system.
  • Support operations, maintenance and repair activities on utility equipment and systems providing utilities serving Manufacturing, Lab, and various operations across ANC site: Specific plant systems include: steam, chilled water, compressed air, cooling tower water, and heating hot water.
  • Support operations, maintenance and repair activities on Specific Manufacturing and Lab utility systems include: clean steam, water for injection (WFI), process cooling water, process air, process gases, process waste, HVAC systems, walk-in cold rooms and freezers, and other environmental control units (chambers).
  • Perform maintenance activities including: inspections, testing, minor/major equipment overhauls, pump rebuild/replacements, valve rebuild/replacements, HVAC troubleshooting/repair, piping modification/repair, etc.
  • Partner with maintenance service providers and equipment vendors.
  • Complete quality and safety documentation and completion of work in a safe, compliant, and timely manner according to planning and predefined schedules with minimal impact to production while aligning with GMPs, SOPs and Amgen policies and regulations.
  • Ensure work order documentation is completed accurately.
  • Identify waste, work-flow interrupters, and other opportunities for improvement, recommend solutions, and assist with implementation.
  • Identify opportunities to learn new skills and actively participate in development that will improve overall team performance.
  • Represent the Utilities Maintenance team in discussions and meetings with management and peers.
  • Provide facility and manufacturing support as needed with on-call rotation - this may be outside of normal working hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
