About The Position

This open competitive advertisement is for a Career Service position located at the South Florida Reception Center in Miami-Dade County. The purpose of the Senior Maintenance Mechanic is to perform and oversee complex automotive repair and maintenance tasks while instructing and supervising inmates, ensuring vehicle upkeep, tracking costs, and maintaining security within a correctional facility. This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in automotive repair and maintenance.
  • In accordance with Chapter 322, Florida Statutes and dependent upon assigned location, this position may require a Commercial Driver License. If the selected candidate is assigned to a location that requires a Commercial Driver License and does not possess a valid Commercial Driver License, he or she must obtain one, at his or her own expense, within 6 months of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Works under the Automotive Equipment Maintenance Superintendent to repair and maintain cars and trucks, including diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Teaches and supervises inmates in complex auto repair skills, such as engine work, tire repair, body painting, and using test equipment safely.
  • Plans and schedules repair jobs, orders parts, and makes sure vehicles get regular maintenance on time.
  • Keeps records of inmate progress for rehabilitation and tracks vehicle maintenance costs following department rules.
  • Maintains security by supervising inmates during work and following procedures to control and account for them.
