About The Position

Etsy is hiring a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join its Inventory team, which develops custom machine-learning models to support product vision and customer impact. The role contributes to improving the shopping experience for Etsy buyers and the selling experience for Etsy sellers by applying modern machine-learning solutions to help sellers create high-quality, diverse inventory. The team works cross-functionally with engineers, machine-learning scientists, product managers, data scientists, designers, and other partners. The position is full-time and reports to the Engineering Manager. The engineer will help build state-of-the-art machine-learning systems for Etsy’s two-sided marketplace, developing and deploying large-scale models and evaluating machine-learning-powered products through A/B tests. The work may also include other duties, and responsibilities may change from time to time. Etsy prioritizes candidates within commuting distance of its Brooklyn office. Depending on proximity, team members are asked to work from the office once or twice per week. Remote candidates outside commuting distance may be considered case by case, with occasional office travel expected. Base salary depends on location, skills, and experience; the posting states that compensation ranges vary between Geo-1 and Geo-2 but does not provide figures. In addition to salary, the role is eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and competitive benefits supporting employees and their families.

Requirements

Collaborate and communicate effectively with teammates and cross-functional partners.

Demonstrated use of machine-learning techniques to solve real-world problems, with expertise in one or more of natural language processing, image processing, reinforcement learning, deep learning, multimodal learning, or large language models.

Proficiency in databases, SQL, and scripting languages.
Experience training, deploying, monitoring, debugging, and iterating on production machine-learning systems.
Ability to apply statistical techniques to real-world challenges.

Produce clear, testable, and maintainable code.
Consider the impact of work on end users.

Responsibilities

Lead engineering plans for challenging problems by breaking complex tasks into manageable components and identifying and estimating milestones.
Mentor junior team members to help them produce high-quality code and machine-learning solutions.
Collaborate with engineering teams and discuss model capabilities with product managers.
Apply recent machine-learning advancements to improve buyer and seller experiences on Etsy.
Develop, optimize, and deploy large-scale machine-learning models to achieve key outcomes.
Run A/B tests to evaluate the effectiveness of machine-learning-powered products.
Partner with product managers, ML engineers, full-stack engineers, and designers to deliver content to millions of users.
Build and improve product experiences involving seller listing titles, descriptions, and images; identifying product issues from reviews; and onboarding sellers on listing best practices.
