About The Position

Nearmap is seeking a Senior MLOps Engineer to join their Platform team in Sydney. This role involves owning greenfield platform work at scale, focusing on the AI systems that power Nearmap's property intelligence services. The position sits between traditional DevOps and AI engineering, suitable for individuals with a strong back-end and platform engineering background looking to transition into AI, or those already in that space. AI experience is considered a bonus, and the team provides coaching. The role offers significant autonomy in designing, building, and operating scalable ML infrastructure, including large-scale batch inference, real-time model serving, and distributed training. A key focus will be building the LLM platform for Nearmap's next generation of generative AI products, managing deployment, governance, experimentation, and cost optimization. The role also involves enhancing developer experience for AI/CV engineering teams through CI/CD pipelines and tooling, driving reliability and observability in production ML systems, and contributing production-quality Python code. The engineer will play a tech lead role on their primary project and engage with ML tooling vendors.

Requirements

  • Production experience building and operating Kubernetes-based platforms (EKS/GKE) at scale
  • High-scale, high-concurrency API development and operation in production environments
  • Real operational mindset: you've managed systems with SLAs and SLOs and stayed close through incidents
  • Strong DevOps fundamentals — CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, deployment pipelines
  • Production-level Python — services and libraries, not just scripts

Nice To Haves

  • Ray Serve or equivalent real-time model serving experience
  • LLM or generative AI platform work in production (beyond PoC)
  • ML observability tooling — Arize AI, Evidently, Prometheus/Grafana
  • Infrastructure-as-code with Terraform
  • Experience at terabyte or petabyte scale
  • GPU/CPU cost optimisation
  • A degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field is welcome — equivalent practical experience is equally valued.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and building scalable ML infrastructure — large-scale batch inference on EKS, real-time model serving via Ray Serve, and GPU-accelerated distributed training on GCP and AWS
  • Building the LLM platform that will underpin Nearmap's next generation of generative AI products — including deployment, governance, experimentation, and cost optimisation across CPU/GPU workloads
  • Owning developer experience for AICV engineering teams — CI/CD pipelines, Docker tooling, ArgoCD, W&B, and Arize AI
  • Driving reliability and observability across production ML systems with real SLAs and SLOs
  • Contributing production-quality Python to shared platform libraries and services
  • Playing a tech lead role on your primary project, with advisory exposure across others
  • Engaging directly with ML tooling vendors including AWS, GCP, Weights & Biases, Confluent, and Arize AI

  • Quarterly wellbeing day off - Four additional days off annually for your 'YOU' Days
  • Wellbeing and technology allowance
  • Annual flu vaccinations
  • Hybrid flexibility for this role
  • Nearmap subscription
  • Stocked kitchen with access to all the snacks you need
