About The Position

First Commerce Credit Union is seeking a detail-driven, strategic Senior Loan Underwriter to join their team. This role is key in lending operations, ensuring quality, compliance, and member-focused solutions across consumer, home equity, and first mortgage loans. The Senior Loan Underwriter will be a decision-maker, handling loan overrides, exceptions, and rate concessions, while also structuring credit risk and recommending portfolio inclusions. The position involves analyzing departmental metrics, collaborating on policy changes, providing member support, conducting credit reviews, and mentoring junior staff. This role is crucial in fulfilling the credit union's vision of empowering generations and transforming communities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in loan underwriting and credit approvals.
  • Deep knowledge of loan products, credit reporting, and fair lending practices.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal judgment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Commitment to delivering consistently courteous, positive member service.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite consumer, home equity, and select first mortgage loans.
  • Make decisions on loan overrides, exceptions to policy, and rate concessions.
  • Structure layered credit risk through collateral, co-makers, terms, and down payments.
  • Recommend non-conforming first mortgages for portfolio inclusion and rate setting.
  • Analyze and report departmental metrics including overrides, quality control, and portfolio trends.
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop budgets and recommend product, rate, and policy changes.
  • Provide consultative support to members to improve credit profiles and offer flexible solutions.
  • Conduct periodic credit reviews and manage credit limit adjustments.
  • Review and process employee loan requests.
  • Serve as a mentor and coach to junior underwriting staff and front-line lending teams.
  • Deliver training to enhance credit-related skills across the organization.
