About The Position

SAP seeks a Senior Legal Counsel to support its Canadian business, with a particular focus on Quebec and other French-language matters. The successful candidate will provide practical, business-oriented legal advice across a broad range of commercial, regulatory, contracting, procurement, technology, privacy, language, and policy-related matters. This role is well suited for a lawyer with experience in the software, cloud, technology, consulting, telecommunications, or enterprise solutions sector who is comfortable working closely with sales, services, compliance, finance, data protection, security, and other internal stakeholders. The role requires excellent legal judgement, strong drafting and negotiation skills, the ability to manage multiple complex matters simultaneously, and the confidence to advise business leaders in a fast-paced, multinational environment. Strong French-language capability is essential. The successful candidate must be able to draft, review, negotiate, and advise in French on complex legal and business matters, particularly where Quebec law, customers, procurement requirements, language requirements, or public policy considerations are involved. English proficiency is also required to collaborate effectively with SAP’s Canadian, North American, and global teams.

Requirements

  • University degree in law is required.
  • Strong French-language legal drafting, negotiation, and advisory skills are required.
  • Strong English-language skills are required for collaboration with internal Canadian, North American, and global stakeholders.
  • Proven experience negotiating and advising on complex commercial, technology, cloud, software, services, licensing, procurement, privacy, security, and related agreements.

Nice To Haves

  • Membership in good standing with a Canadian law society is preferred; membership with the Barreau du Québec or another relevant Canadian law society would be an asset.
  • At least 7 years of relevant legal experience is preferred, ideally including experience in the software, cloud, technology, consulting, telecommunications, or enterprise services sector.
  • Experience supporting Quebec-related matters, French-language contracting, public-sector or procurement matters, policy-sensitive issues, or regulated customer environments would be an asset.
  • Strong business judgement and ability to provide practical, solution-oriented legal advice in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously, prioritise effectively, and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, sound judgement, attention to detail, and ability to build trusted relationships with business stakeholders and legal colleagues.
  • Experience working in a multinational organisation, matrixed environment, or with cross-border teams would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, negotiate, and advise on a broad range of customer, partner, supplier, services, cloud, software, and technology-related agreements.
  • Support commercial negotiations across SAP’s lines of business, including cloud services, software licensing, professional services, data protection, security, confidentiality, intellectual property, procurement, and related risk areas.
  • Provide legal support for Quebec and other French-language matters, including contract drafting and negotiation in French, review of French-language materials, and advice on applicable legal, regulatory, procurement, language, privacy, and policy considerations.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on legal implications of proposed business actions and develop practical, risk-balanced solutions aligned with SAP policies and business objectives.
  • Work closely with internal teams, including Sales, Services, Commercial Finance, Pricing, Data Protection, Security, Revenue Recognition, Compliance, Procurement, and Shared Services during contract drafting, review, approval, and negotiation processes.
  • Support complex transactions by identifying legal and business risks, escalating issues appropriately, and helping drive matters to resolution in a timely and commercially reasonable manner.
  • Provide internal client support by acting as a trusted point of contact for sales, services, account teams, business leaders, and other internal stakeholders requiring legal guidance.
  • Collaborate with legal colleagues locally, regionally, and globally to ensure consistency with SAP policies, templates, approval requirements, and risk management practices.
  • Support the development, localisation, review, or update of contract templates, playbooks, guidance materials, training resources, and other legal documentation where required.
  • Manage, coordinate, or work effectively with external counsel when specialised local advice or additional support is required.
  • Monitor relevant legal and regulatory developments affecting SAP’s Canadian business, with particular attention to French-language and Quebec-related matters.
  • Undertake special projects and additional legal responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
