Trans Mountain Corporation operates Canada’s only pipeline system transporting oil products to the West Coast. We deliver approximately 890,000 barrels of petroleum products each day through a dual pipeline system of more than 1,150 kilometres of pipeline in Alberta, British Columbia and Washington state. Trans Mountain also operates a state-of-the-art loading facility, Westridge Marine Terminal, with three berths providing tidewater access to global markets. Trans Mountain is seeking a collaborative, motivated, and values driven individual to join our dynamic team as a Senior Lawyer, Indigenous Relations and Land. In this position, you will play a key role in advising and providing strategic guidance on matters related to energy regulation, real estate and land law, and Aboriginal law and land rights. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong legal expertise in regulatory compliance, engagement, negotiation, consultation, land management, and Aboriginal programs.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Law (L.LB) or Jurist Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Membership or certification with a recognized legal or professional association (e.g., Law Society of Alberta, Canadian Bar Association, Calgary Bar Association).
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive legal experience in private practice, in-house, or government, specializing in energy regulation, Aboriginal law, and real estate/land law.
  • Strong understanding of federal and provincial regulatory frameworks, including the Canada Energy Regulator, BC and Alberta authorities, and energy-sector regulatory processes.
  • Experience with energy industry regulation, including pipeline operations, administrative law, constitutional considerations, and alternative dispute resolution.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with regulatory services, land services, permitting teams, and Indigenous Relations on complex legal matters.
  • A track record of delivering high‑quality work, managing competing priorities, and supporting key business processes or operational functions.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds and levels across the organization.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to convey information clearly, respectfully, and professionally.
  • Comfortable working in environments with a high degree of ambiguity, exercising sound judgment and initiative when information is incomplete or requirements evolve.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal guidance and strategic direction on regulatory matters and energy regulation.
  • Provide legal guidance and strategic direction on Aboriginal law and real estate/land law matters, including negotiations and dispute resolution.
  • Advise on real estate/land law matters in Alberta and British Columbia and support business groups with land access, negotiating land access agreements and settlements, and resolve land-related files including claims, conflicts, and contractual disputes.
  • Oversee the acquisition and maintenance of land rights.
  • Cure title defects, handle crossing agreements, manage land acquisition, expropriation and compensation matters including before the Canada Energy Regulator, and resolve third-party land disputes.
  • Advise on Aboriginal law matters and support business groups with engagement and consultation requirements, negotiating agreements, and resolving related issues including contractual disputes.
  • Oversee the acquisition and maintenance of land rights on Indigenous lands, including on First Nation Reserve and in traditional territories, handle related agreements and processes, and resolve related disputes.
  • Advise on federal regulatory and energy law matter including before the Canada Energy Regulator and other federal authorities, and provincial authorities in Alberta and British Columbia.
  • Advise on matters governed by the Canada Energy Regulator, the BC Energy Regulator, or provincial utility boards.
  • Prepare evidence, manage regulatory applications, and support or lead hearings.
  • Provide legal support for all operational matters, including land issues, contractual arrangements, and negotiations with stakeholders.
  • Maintain strong internal controls to support compliance with regulatory requirements and corporate standards.
  • Develop and implement procedures to support internal regulatory deliverables and external filings.
  • Coordinate and supervise external legal counsel for efficient handling of Aboriginal law and real estate/land law matters.
  • Advance Trans Mountain regulatory, land management and Aboriginal programs.
