About The Position

The Senior Java Software Engineer is responsible for designing, building, modernizing, and supporting reliable enterprise applications and integrations. This role is ideal for an experienced developer with strong Java skills, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to collaborate with business stakeholders, technical team members, and external partners to deliver practical, maintainable solutions. The Senior Java Software Engineer will report to the IT Delivery Manager and work closely with IT, business stakeholders, and external partners to deliver and support enterprise application solutions. This role is hybrid Chicago (working one day per week from the office). Compensation and benefits will be discussed during the recruiting process and will be based on experience, qualifications, and location.

Requirements

  • Strong proficiency in Java/Jakarta EE software development, including object-oriented design, application architecture, debugging, and maintainable coding practices.
  • Proficient with both JavaScript and SQL for front-end, back-end, or full-stack development, including working knowledge of relational databases.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented design, application architecture, APIs, databases, integration patterns, data pipelines, and secure coding practices.
  • Experience working in a team-based software delivery environment using source control, testing, deployment practices, and continuous integration/continuous delivery tools.
  • Strong understanding of application security, authentication, authorization, and secure coding practices.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and deliver practical, maintainable solutions.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly understand complex systems, data models, and technical dependencies.
  • Strong communication skills; able to present technical concepts in business-friendly terms.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments utilizing Scrum or similar methodologies and collaborating with cross-functional teams
  • Must be eligible to work in Chicago, IL, without visa sponsorship
  • MUST RESIDE WITHIN COMMUTING DISTANCE OF OUR CHICAGO HQ OFFICE FOR A HYBRID (MINIMUM 1 DAY A WEEK) IN OFFICE ENVIRONMENT.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure or other cloud platforms.
  • Experience with Open Liberty or similar Java application server platforms.
  • Experience integrating with Microsoft Dynamics 365, finance, CRM, or operations-related systems is a plus.
  • Experience with .NET is a plus, or willingness to learn and contribute to .NET-based applications as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI-assisted development tools while maintaining strong software engineering discipline, code quality standards, and security practices.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support Java-based enterprise applications and related integrations.
  • Contribute to reliable software delivery through effective use of version control, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and deployment practices.
  • Support production applications by troubleshooting issues, improving stability, and participating in operational support as needed.
  • Evaluate, refactor, and modernize legacy applications to improve performance, maintainability, scalability, and alignment with current technology standards.
  • Develop a strong understanding of application functionality, data models, integrations, and supporting business processes.
  • Translate business and technical requirements into well-designed, maintainable software solutions.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues across applications, APIs, integrations, databases, and data pipelines.
  • Apply and promote engineering best practices in code quality, testing, release management, documentation, and monitoring.
  • Identify opportunities to automate repetitive tasks and improve application reliability, maintainability, and developer productivity.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and team members to improve system usability, functionality, and alignment with business needs.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, analysts, architects, administrators, other developers, and external vendors to clarify requirements and deliver effective solutions.
  • Communicate technical concepts, progress, risks, and dependencies clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to teammates through code reviews, design discussions, troubleshooting, mentoring, and knowledge sharing.
