About The Position

The Texas Department of Public Safety is seeking a Senior Java Engineer/Programmer for their Austin location. This is a hybrid role, requiring on-site presence and telework. The position involves overseeing coding, testing, and debugging of programs, developing flowcharts and diagrams, preparing instructions for production runs and end-users, and leading research and analysis for project proposals and modifications. The role also includes analyzing computer applications for equipment requirements, evaluating database schemas, writing and running SQL code, and deploying packages/triggers. Troubleshooting application issues by analyzing logs, system messages, and performance metrics is also a key responsibility. The engineer will confer with staff to coordinate projects, prepare detailed analyses and verification procedures, develop programming standards, and implement specialized programs. Recommendations for system improvements, creation of backup and restore processes, and coordination of the work of others are also part of the role. Regular attendance and adherence to approved work hours are expected.

Requirements

  • 15 years of JAVA experience
  • 10 years of SQL database experience
  • 08 years of Sustaining and development experience in support of large applications in a team environment
  • 05 years of Linux experience
  • 08 years of experience with Atlassian tool suite, especially JIRA
  • 08 years of experience with Agile methodology

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the coding, testing, and debugging of programs as outlined by a system’s technical and functional requirements and oversee the preparation of test data.
  • Oversee the development of and/or prepare flowcharts and diagrams.
  • Oversee the preparation of and/or prepare instructions for use during production runs and coordinate the preparation and development of instructions or manuals for end users.
  • Lead and coordinate the research and the analysis required for project proposal, software and systems modifications, and new projects.
  • Analyze proposed computer applications in terms of equipment requirements and capabilities; evaluate database schemas, write and run SQL code, and deploy packages/triggers; review and revise programs to increase operating efficiency or to adapt new procedures.
  • Analyze logs, system messages, thread connectivity, memory utilization, disk input/output, and disk space in order to troubleshoot application issues.
  • Confer with staff members to schedule work and coordinate programming projects.
  • Prepare detailed analyses, plans, diagrams, and verification procedures for existing and proposed computer applications.
  • Develop standards and procedures for programming staff, and related interfaces and reports.
  • Develop and implement specialized programs to supplement and enhance systems software.
  • Recommend, coordinate, and implement changes to improve application and overall system performance.
  • Create and maintain backup and restore processes to ensure business continuity.
  • Coordinate, assign, and track the work of others.
  • Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
