Senior Java Developer
About The Position
We are seeking a Senior Java Developer to support the sustainment, enhancement, and modernization of mission-critical applications supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The successful candidate will contribute across both legacy enterprise platforms and modern application architectures, helping to bridge existing systems with future-state modernization initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about Government modernization. The primary focus of this role is enterprise Java application development utilizing legacy technologies while contributing to modernization efforts leveraging Spring Boot, microservices, and API-driven architectures.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 8+ years of software development experience
- Strong experience with Java 17+ development
- Experience with Spring Framework and/or Spring Boot
- Experience developing REST APIs and web services
- Strong experience with microservices, JPA/Hibernate, Maven, and Swagger/OpenAPI
- Experience working with Oracle or other relational databases
- Experience using Git-based source control
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Strong verbal communication skills
Nice To Haves
- Experience with WebLogic application server administration or deployment
- Experience with Struts, JSP, EJB, JMS, or other enterprise Java technologies
- Experience with IBM ILOG JRules / Operational Decision Manager (ODM)
- Experience with microservices transaction orchestration
- Experience with Docker and containerized applications
- Experience with React, JavaScript, or TypeScript
- Experience supporting federal government or VA programs
- Experience with Jira and Confluence
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise Java applications
- Analyze and resolve complex software defects and production issues
- Support enhancements and sustainment activities for applications utilizing Java, Spring Framework, Struts, JSP, EJB, JMS, WebLogic, Hibernate, Oracle, and related technologies
- Expert at monolith system to microservices decomposition, microservices transaction orchestration is a plus
- Design and implement REST and SOAP-based services and integrations
- Develop and maintain modern backend services utilizing Java 17+, Spring Boot, microservices, JPA/Hibernate, REST APIs, Maven, and Swagger/OpenAPI
- Collaborate with architects and senior developers on modernization initiatives
- Develop and optimize SQL queries and database integrations
- Participate in code reviews and mentor junior developers
- Contribute to automated testing, CI/CD processes, and application deployments
- Collaborate with cross-functional Agile teams to deliver high-quality software solutions
