About The Position

Talus is seeking a Senior Instrumentation Engineer to own instrument hardware for its talusOne and talusTen product lines, including field instruments, control valves, control panels, and interconnections. The role covers the full lifecycle from specifications and datasheets through procurement, factory testing, loop checkout, commissioning, and reliability in service. The engineer owns requirements, guides engineering, integration, and vendor partners, and approves final deliverables. The position reports to the VP Engineering. Talus is an owner-operator building repeatable green ammonia plants and selling ammonia under long-term contracts. Because specifications are reused across its fleet, consistency is important. This fully remote position is open worldwide to candidates with strong English skills. It involves up to 50% travel, including international trips to operating and project sites in the US Midwest, Europe, and East and southern Africa, as well as vendor and fabricator facilities in the US and China. Site work at operating ammonia plants may involve outdoor conditions, variable weather, noise, and hazardous materials such as ammonia and hydrogen, with appropriate PPE.

Requirements

  • Strong commitment to the Talus mission and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven startup environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Instrumentation, or Controls Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 10+ years in process instrumentation engineering, mostly in hydrogen, ammonia, chemical, or gas-processing plant service.
  • Personally taken at least two plants or major units through the full instrumentation lifecycle, from datasheets and RFQ through bid evaluation, FAT, loop checkout, and SAT, and into steady operation.
  • Owned the control narrative for at least one unit, either writing it or directing the engineer or integrator who wrote it, and signed off on the result.
  • Built an instrument specification set from scratch or taken one over from an EPC and made it the company's.
  • Working command of ISA 5.1 and ISA 20, API 551, IEC 60534 / ISA 75, NEC 500/505, IEC 60079 with ATEX/IECEx, and UL 508A/698A or IEC 61439, with judgment about which standards govern.
  • Ability to specify instruments and panels to either code basis: UL/NEC for North America or IEC/ATEX with CE marking elsewhere.
  • Working understanding of IEC 61511 / ISA 84 and how SIL ratings affect device selection and proof testing.
  • Experience witnessing panel FAT, checking loops, and troubleshooting installed instruments.
  • Clear technical writing skills and ability to direct junior and contracted engineers.
  • Strong written and spoken English.

Nice To Haves

  • Instrumentation experience in ammonia synthesis, hydrogen electrolysis, air separation, or refinery hydrogen units.
  • Functional safety training, such as an ISA SIS certificate, exida CFSP, or TÜV FS, and experience specifying SIL-rated devices.
  • Ability to lead the purchase of analyzer and fire-and-gas packages with a third-party analyzer engineer.
  • Experience on the supply side at an instrument OEM, panel shop, or system integrator.
  • Instrumentation experience on skid-mounted or modular plants, where routing and access are hard constraints.
  • Experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation or equivalent, and valve and flow element sizing tools.
  • PE, CEng, or ISA CAP / CCST credentials, and experience within an ISO 9001 quality system.
  • Hands-on experience at project or plant sites in emerging markets.

Responsibilities

  • Write and maintain instrument specifications for each product line, including specifications, datasheets, hook-up and installation details, and panel and interconnection standards.
  • Own control valves, regulators, and local controllers from Process's specification through procurement.
  • Translate process duty into defensible instrument datasheets; maintain the instrument index from preliminary through as-built and mark up P&IDs for instrumentation content.
  • Select and justify measurement technology for each process service and its conditions.
  • Set panel design standards to UL 508A/698A or IEC 61439 as required by the site; own area-classification inputs and protection concepts for the applicable NEC or IEC/ATEX basis.
  • Own hardware content of the controls design basis, including the instrument index, measurement ranges, device trip and alarm capability, and panel requirements; provide hardware constraints to the control system owner for control narratives, cause-and-effect tables, and alarm lists.
  • For LOPA-assigned SIL targets, select SIL-rated devices, support SIL verification, and write field proof-test procedures.
  • Provide technical support for instrument, valve, and panel packages, including RFQ packages, technical bid tabulations, award recommendations, RFIs, clarifications, and final contract-basis documents.
  • Define and witness panel FAT and instrument inspections against the issued design.
  • Support Deployment in preparing the instrument portion of commissioning packages, including loop check sheets, calibration records, and loop folders; assure package quality and witness loop checkout and SAT.
  • Resolve instrument problems on operating plants at root cause, maintain the bad-actor list, and set calibration intervals with the reliability engineer.
  • Represent instrumentation in HAZOP, LOPA, MOC, and incident investigations, and incorporate site learnings into the specification set.
  • Direct junior and contracted engineers and hold integrators, panel shops, and vendors accountable for scope, schedule, and quality across time zones and cultures.
