About The Position

The Senior Instructional Designer/Technologist manages the university’s learning management system (D2L-Brightspace) and related educational technologies to create, design, enhance, and support effective learning experiences. The senior technologist is a key member of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) and reports to the director of the CETL department.

Requirements

  • A minimum of three years’ direct experience working with instructional technologies at an accredited institution is required.
  • Knowledge of educational technology usage, design, best practices, industry trends, etc.
  • Clear grasp of educational research on distance, online, and digital learning
  • Knowledge of pedagogical issues related to face-to-face, hybrid, and online teaching and learning
  • Technical fluency in D2L-Brightspace (or a comparable learning management system), as well a commonly used applications, software, and databases used in higher education including MS Office, Google suite, Camtasia, TurnItIn, Respondus, etc
  • Strong organizational and project management skills; ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate with a diverse audience about technical and academic topics
  • Ability to effectively deliver presentations and training courses, comfortable with public speaking
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences (faculty, staff, students, etc) effectively to adequately train and promote the effective use of online educational tools and systems
  • Ability to quickly adapt to new technologies
  • Ability to develop a rapport with faculty, staff, and students to effectively deliver training, enhance learning
  • Comfortable working in a rapidly changing environment
  • Demonstrated passion for improving teaching and learning
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in producing media and in making technical decisions

Nice To Haves

  • Completed master's level coursework is preferred.
  • A master's degree in an educational technology field or a related discipline is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate an attitude and behavior that reflects the values and mission of the University.
  • Administrative management and support of the university’s learning management system (LMS), D2L-Brightspace
  • Maintain a thorough technical and functional understanding of the university’s LMS system, D2L-Brightspace, in order to provide administrative system support including troubleshooting, integration with other university systems, coordination of department/school/college needs with the parameters of the system
  • Ensure all educational technology tools and systems are up to date and coordinate systems testing, training, updates, upgrades, etc.
  • Serve as the point of contact for faculty (primary) and students (secondary) regarding D2L-Brightspace and instructional delivery by responding with care in a timely manner; anticipate end-user needs and respond proactively
  • Serve as the primary liaison between D2L-Brightspace and the university LMS/educational technology training and support outreach
  • Design, deliver, and assess educational technology training programs for various audiences using various media to maximize usage as well as to promote efficient use of the system; customize training programs according to department/school/college needs
  • Advocate and support the use of educational technology as part of curriculum delivery seeking out opportunities to enhance the learning experience with technology
  • Lead educational technology projects and initiatives as they develop
  • Consult with academic units and faculty to ensure optimal delivery of a wide range of educational technology topics including D2L-Brightspace, instructional approaches, course design, assignment design, thoughtful use of technology in the classroom and related areas
  • Support the creation and/or redesign of courses and faculty-projects for the classroom and related areas
  • Support/collaborate in the creation/publishing of video, file conversions, etc. utilized in the digital learning environment
  • Support compliance and quality assurance of online learning courses and programs, educational technology operations and planning
  • Collaborate with academic units to develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures regarding online course development, content, and management
  • Provide recommendations to enhance the university’s educational technology tools and resources
  • Identify emerging technologies well-suited for university programs; apply innovation and creativity to recommend and develop new resources and new uses of existing resources
  • Follow national trends, state and federal regulations and accreditation standards to support compliance
  • Hire, train, and supervise student employees
  • Serve on Faculty Senate-appointed committees as assigned
  • Serve on advisory boards, councils, and other bodies as assigned
  • Participate in CETL short and long-term planning in support of the department’s mission and vision
  • Work closely with Campus Technology Services to coordinate a wide range of activities including technology implementation, troubleshooting, etc.
  • Work closely with the Registrar’s office to coordinate and resolve enrollment, grading, and other issues
  • Collaborate as needed with CTS and other educational technology support staff (Business School, Law School) to ensure high-quality delivery of educational technology support for all university constituents
  • Other duties as assigned.
