Senior Innovation Engineer - Electrical Systems

Boom SupersonicCentennial, CO
$124,800 - $187,050

About The Position

Boom Supersonic is building Superpower, a 42-megawatt industrial gas turbine designed for frontier AI data centers where power demand is rapidly increasing. This role is responsible for the medium-voltage electrical system that converts shaft power into dependable 13.8kV electrical power, ensuring it is protected, controlled, and delivered reliably to islanded loads. This is a critical role in designing and implementing a scalable power architecture for next-generation AI data centers, operating at industrial scale without grid reliance for stability. The engineer will define from first principles how a standalone 13.8kV machine starts, regulates voltage and frequency, handles transients, protects itself, and delivers power to critical loads. Grid interconnect is an option, but off-grid operation is the primary design condition.

Requirements

  • Deep hands-on experience with medium-voltage systems, including switchgear, breakers, protective relaying, grounding, and generator integration in industrial or power-generation environments.
  • Solid understanding of rotating machinery: generator behavior, excitation, AVR systems, synchronization, and transient response under load, faults, and trips.
  • Experience with protection coordination, including relay selection, settings, differential and overcurrent schemes, and the ability to own this work from study through commissioning.
  • Ability to read and produce clean MV electrical drawings (one-lines, wire diagrams, panel layouts) that can be built and commissioned without ambiguity.
  • Comfort working across mechanical, controls, and instrumentation teams and translating between them when needed.
  • U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Nice To Haves

  • A clear point of view on how medium-voltage systems should be built.
  • Enjoys tracing issues during first energization and testing.
  • Comfortable working on switchgear lineups and producing coordination studies.
  • Desire to be the primary driver of system functionality.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end electrical design of the 13.8kV medium-voltage system on Superpower, from architecture through first energization, endurance testing, and field commissioning.
  • Define the MV architecture, single-line diagrams, protection philosophy, and concept of operations during preliminary design.
  • Specify and source long-lead switchgear and generator circuit breakers.
  • Produce protection coordination studies, relay settings, and MV electrical drawings during detailed design.
  • Lead first energization, relay commissioning, synchronization, load acceptance, and step-load testing.
  • Manage generation, distribution, and protection of all medium-voltage power from generator terminals through switchgear to downstream loads and optional grid interconnect.
  • Oversee generator excitation, voltage regulation, and interface requirements with the turbine control system.
  • Design switchgear and breaker systems, including generator circuit breakers, feeder breakers, and bus-tie configurations.
  • Select, set, and coordinate protection relays, including differential, overcurrent, ground fault, voltage, and frequency protection.
  • Perform fault-current management, interrupting-duty analysis, and equipment rating coordination.
  • Ensure frequency control, synchronization, and load acceptance for islanded operation.
  • Select CT/PT, and design metering and sensing infrastructure for protection, control, and monitoring.
  • Integrate MV load banks, manage transient response, and conduct step-load testing.
  • Define the neutral grounding strategy and ground fault detection.
  • Conduct arc-flash hazard analysis, design electrical safety systems, and interlock design.

Benefits

  • Long-term incentives/equity
  • Flexible PTO policy
  • Many other progressive benefits
