Senior Infrastructure Engineer

Level•Austin, TX

About The Position

Level is a learning technology company that helps students build academic and life skills through standards-aligned practice and interactive design. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer will join the Platform team to architect, build, and operate the cloud infrastructure and developer platform used by Level products. The role owns critical infrastructure end to end, including Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, CI/CD and GitOps delivery, networking, DNS, observability, and cloud security. It provides reliable, self-service foundations for engineering teams and works on a small, senior-leaning team where infrastructure decisions directly affect reliability, performance, cost, and developer velocity.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience operating large-scale cloud infrastructure; AWS is strongly preferred.
  • Deep infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform/OpenTofu; experience with CloudFormation, Pulumi, or CDK is also relevant.
  • Strong production experience with Docker and Kubernetes, including EKS.
  • Proficiency in scripting or automation with Python, Go, or Bash.
  • Solid cloud networking fundamentals, including VPC, DNS, load balancing, ingress, firewalls/WAF, and VPNs, and knowledge of security best practices.
  • Proven CI/CD and GitOps experience with GitHub Actions or similar tools.
  • Observability experience with metrics, logs, and traces, used to drive real decisions.
  • A track record of independently leading infrastructure projects end to end.
  • Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ArgoCD, Atlantis, Linkerd/Envoy, Traefik, Karpenter, or Helm.
  • Experience with OpenTelemetry, SigNoz, Grafana, Datadog, or Prometheus.
  • Backstage or other internal developer platform experience.
  • AI/ML infrastructure experience, such as GPU scheduling, model or agent hosting, or inference gateways.
  • Rust service CI/CD experience or CloudFront/CDN experience.
  • AWS Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer – Professional certification.
  • Distributed-systems background or open-source infrastructure contributions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate secure, highly available AWS infrastructure using Terraform/OpenTofu and a GitOps workflow with Atlantis.
  • Own capacity planning, disaster recovery, and cost optimization for the systems in operation.
  • Operate and evolve EKS, including autoscaling with Karpenter, upgrades, core add-ons, and Helm-based delivery with ArgoCD.
  • Build and maintain GitHub Actions pipelines that enable platform and product teams to ship safely and quickly; provide self-service tooling where appropriate.
  • Own ingress and egress, service mesh and mTLS, load balancing, edge TLS, and DNS.
  • Build observability with OpenTelemetry and SigNoz, and use telemetry to guide reliability, performance, and cost decisions.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex incidents, leading troubleshooting and post-mortems.
  • Apply cloud security best practices across identity, secrets, and network boundaries, with particular care for student data and K-12 privacy.
  • Operate security posture and vulnerability tooling, including Security Hub, GuardDuty, Inspector, and Snyk, as well as organizational guardrails such as Control Tower and SCPs.
  • Set standards, mentor engineers, and continuously improve the platform.
