Senior Industrialization Project Engineer

A123 Systems LLC•Novi, MI

About The Position

The Senior Industrialization Project Engineer supports the development, installation, validation, and launch of lithium-ion battery module, pack, and system manufacturing capabilities. The role combines hands-on engineering execution with project coordination and serves as the primary interface among architects, engineering firms, general contractors, utility providers, equipment suppliers, EH&S teams, and manufacturing engineering teams. Its purpose is to ensure facilities and manufacturing lines are designed and delivered for safe, efficient, and scalable battery production. The position manages schedules, budgets, technical deliverables, and compliance with approved specifications. It leads facility planning and industrialization, defines equipment and process requirements, coordinates installation and commissioning, and supports process validation and production readiness. The engineer also supports production ramp-up, documentation, training, and handover to operations and maintenance, while identifying opportunities to improve facility efficiency and reduce operating costs. The role requires on-site work during installation and launch and travel to suppliers or other company locations as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Facilities Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience in facility engineering, industrialization, capital project execution, or manufacturing development within industrial or advanced manufacturing environments for battery modules, packs, and systems.
  • Demonstrated experience managing cross-functional teams, engineering consultants, contractors, equipment suppliers, and internal product and process engineering throughout project execution.
  • Proven record of delivering complex capital projects on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing facility startup, equipment installation, commissioning, and production readiness activities.
  • Experience developing facility utility requirements and infrastructure solutions for production operations.
  • Hands-on experience with equipment specification, supplier technical reviews, installation, commissioning, and acceptance testing.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, equipment specifications, process documentation, and utility requirements.
  • Practical understanding of manufacturing process controls, PFMEA, root-cause analysis, and process validation.
  • Familiarity with CAD tools such as AutoCAD.
  • Willingness to work on-site during installation and launch and travel to suppliers or other company locations as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, or equivalent professional certification.
  • Experience supporting lithium-ion battery, EV, or ESS advanced manufacturing facilities.
  • Direct experience with lithium-ion battery module, pack, or energy storage system manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead facility planning and industrialization activities for new battery module, pack, and system manufacturing operations.
  • Manage engineering deliverables, technical risks, changes, schedules, and facility, utility, and equipment budgets; provide clear recommendations on technical trade-offs.
  • Evaluate proposed changes for their impact on safety, product quality, process performance, cost, and schedule.
  • Define equipment and process requirements, evaluate supplier proposals, and verify technical compliance with approved specifications and acceptance criteria.
  • Lead or support equipment installation, FAT/SAT, process validation, and technical issue resolution to demonstrate safety, quality, and production performance.
  • Coordinate equipment installation, commissioning, process trials, and manufacturing readiness reviews.
  • Verify equipment performance, cycle time, repeatability, process capability, error-proofing, and applicable safety functions.
  • Define manufacturing equipment requirements for electrical power, compressed air, ventilation, cooling, floor loading, access, and other applicable utilities.
  • Ensure facility design supports operational efficiency, safety, maintainability, and scalability.
  • Work with facilities engineering, EHS, architects, contractors, and equipment suppliers to ensure building modifications support manufacturing requirements.
  • Review equipment installation layouts, utility interfaces, service clearances, material flow, and maintenance access.
  • Coordinate manufacturing processes, tooling, automation, testing, and traceability requirements across product engineering, manufacturing, quality, and suppliers.
  • Support production ramp-up, improve yield and throughput, and complete documentation, training, and handover to operations and maintenance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve facility efficiency and reduce operating costs.
  • Work on-site during installation and launch and travel to suppliers or other company locations as required.
