Senior Industrial Designer

Joby AviationSanta Cruz, CA

About The Position

We are seeking a Senior Industrial Designer to design the aesthetic and functional evolution of our current aircraft and design what’s next. This role is at the intersection of aerospace precision and automotive-grade luxury, requiring a designer who can balance the "magic" of the passenger experience with the "mechanics" of FAA certification. You will be responsible for defining the visual language of the Joby brand across physical touchpoints—from the cockpit ergonomics to the cabin textures—ensuring our aircraft is not just a feat of engineering, but a world-class product.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Industrial Design, Transportation Design, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of professional industrial design experience in Automotive, Aerospace, or Premium Transportation.
  • A world-class portfolio demonstrating a strong sense of form, sophisticated surfacing, and a deep understanding of user experience.
  • Expert-level proficiency in 3D modeling (CATIA 3DX or Rhino, Blender) and visualization tools (KeyShot, VRED, or Unreal Engine).
  • Hands-on experience with advanced materials, including carbon fiber composites, technical textiles, and lightweight metallics.
  • Experience working with model shops to oversee the fabrication of high-fidelity physical prototypes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in both Automotive and Aerospace Design is highly valued.
  • Must have the ability to have the design sensitivity found in car design combined with the real world experience of designing certified aircraft interiors.
  • Familiarity with FAA or EASA aerospace regulations and best practices is a significant plus.
  • A "zero-ego" approach to feedback and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, iterative startup environment.
  • Ability to simplify complex technical requirements into elegant, intuitive, and iconic design solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Follow design process from blue-sky sketching and 2D ideation to 3D surface development and high-fidelity physical prototyping.
  • Design ergonomic, lightweight cabin environments, including seating, lighting, and stowage, focusing on "human-centric" design that meets Part 23 certification standards.
  • Develop and implement Color, Materials, and Finishes (CMF) strategies that prioritize sustainability, weight reduction, and premium aesthetics.
  • Partner closely with Cabin Design Engineers and Manufacturing Teams to ensure designs are optimized for high-volume carbon fiber production and assembly.
  • Work with CATIA to create Class-A surfaces while overseeing the creation of full-scale models for design validation.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the eVTOL landscape and automotive trends to keep Joby at the forefront.
  • Be a steward of the Joby brand and translate the brand across all products from the aircraft, infrastructure, marketing and digital products.
