Senior ICT Systems Engineer – NATO FAS Specialist

DEFTEC CorporationChesapeake, VA
Onsite

About The Position

DEFTEC delivers mission-critical solutions through skillfully delivered services and innovative products. We are inspired by our clients' critical missions and driven to provide the most effective solutions to execute their missions, operational challenges, and requirements. Our dedicated, experienced, and talented employees work closely with our clients to ensure the delivery of exceptional services and products. We are seeking a hands-on Senior ICT Systems Engineer to work on-site in Norfolk, VA, keeping NATO's Functional Area Services (FAS) and Communities of Interest (COI) systems running. This is a build-and-maintain role rather than a design-only one. Your day centers on installing and configuring the FAS applications themselves, standing up and tuning the Windows and Linux servers they run on, and administering the SQL Server and Oracle databases underneath them. When a server, application, or database has a problem, you are the person who diagnoses it and restores service, and when NATO runs an exercise, you adapt the configurations that make it happen. The work sits squarely at the application, server, and database layer, so it is a strong fit for an engineer who would rather be hands-on-keys than working purely at the architecture or network level. This is a full-time, on-site contract position based in Norfolk, VA, running from August 2026 through December 2026.

Requirements

  • A currently active NATO SECRET security clearance.
  • Extensive hands-on experience installing, configuring, and deploying applications onto Windows and Linux servers in an enterprise environment.
  • Windows Server administration across multiple versions (2012, 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025), including build, configuration, performance tuning, and security hardening.
  • Hands-on Linux server administration and maintenance.
  • Practical experience creating and managing Group Policy Objects (GPO) and administering Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and ADFS.
  • Database administration experience with both Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle, including installation, maintenance, tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues across the application, server, and database layers in mission-critical environments, including endpoint protection (Trellix) issues.
  • Scripting proficiency in PowerShell, Python, and/or Bash for automation.
  • A thorough knowledge of English, both written and spoken.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience administering NATO COI/FAS systems and supporting NATO exercises.
  • SME-level knowledge of NATO C2 systems and ICT architectures.
  • Experience ensuring interoperability across multiple commands or domains.
  • Prior experience working in a multinational environment comprising both military and civilian elements.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., Microsoft Windows Server, Linux, database, or security certifications).

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain the FAS application suite and the COI systems it supports, keeping them available and performing for the users who rely on them.
  • Build, administer, and tune Windows servers across current and legacy versions (2012, 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025), including performance tuning and security hardening.
  • Administer and maintain the Linux servers supporting the FAS environment.
  • Install, patch, tune, and troubleshoot the Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle databases that back the FAS applications.
  • Manage the enterprise services that tie the environment together - Active Directory, Group Policy (GPO), DNS, DHCP, and ADFS.
  • Diagnose and resolve application, server, and database incidents end to end, restoring service quickly.
  • Ensure FAS and C2 systems interoperate cleanly across commands.
  • Keep systems secure and compliant through patching, hardening, vulnerability remediation, and endpoint protection troubleshooting (Trellix).
  • Stand up and adapt system configurations to support NATO exercises.
  • Automate routine administrative and operational tasks using PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
  • Document configurations, procedures, and best practices, and provide hands-on technical support to end users.
  • Occasional lifting of equipment (up to 25 lbs) and physical setup work, such as desk installations, may be required.
