About The Position

AtkinsRéalis’ Minerals & Metals (M&M) team provides tailored engineering solutions to the mining industry, integrating environmental considerations at every stage of a project - from early design through construction, operations, closure, and post-closure monitoring. Our work supports clients in meeting the highest standards of environmental performance, while contributing to the responsible development of mineral resources in support of the energy transition. Within M&M, the Tailings, Water and Environment (TWE) – Hydrogeology and Mining Environment Group delivers specialized hydrogeological services for mining projects in Canada and internationally. Our team supports clients through groundwater characterization, numerical groundwater modelling, groundwater resource assessments and impact analysis, and contaminant hydrogeology, working closely with multidisciplinary teams on complex mining projects. We are seeking a Senior Hydrogeologist – Minerals and Metals to bring additional technical expertise and support project delivery across the practice. As a Senior Hydrogeologist – Minerals and Metals, you will play a key role in the technical delivery and development of hydrogeology and mining environment projects. Working within a senior technical career stream, you will provide technical leadership, oversight, and assurance on complex mandates. You will lead and support mandates across the mining lifecycle, ensuring the technical quality of work, contributing to sound scientific and regulatory outcomes, and supporting project teams through expert judgement, review and guidance. You will also contribute to business development initiatives and the continued growth of the hydrogeology practice.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related earth‑science discipline.
  • Licensed professional in good standing with a Canadian regulatory body (e.g., P.Geo. or P.Eng.).
  • Typically, 15–20+ years of progressive experience in hydrogeology and/or mining environment consulting, with demonstrated senior technical responsibilities.
  • Experience leading or supporting projects end‑to‑end, including coordination of multidisciplinary teams, budgets, schedules, and client interactions.
  • Strong experience in groundwater characterization, numerical groundwater modelling, groundwater resource assessment, impact analysis, and/or contaminant hydrogeology.
  • Proven ability to author, review, and defend high‑quality technical deliverables, and clearly communicate complex concepts to technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Strong understanding of provincial and federal groundwater, water‑resources, and environmental regulations applicable to mining projects.
  • Demonstrated interest in business development and practice growth, including proposal support, client engagement, and identifying opportunities aligned with client needs.
  • Excellent proficiency in English and French.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for short assignments in Canada or internationally.
  • This position requires proficiency in English, as the role involves collaboration with English‑speaking clients, suppliers, and multidisciplinary teams across various projects.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a senior technical specialist and subject‑matter expert in hydrogeology and mining environment, providing advanced technical judgement on complex projects.
  • Lead, review, and critique hydrogeological conceptual models, investigation programs, and numerical groundwater modelling to ensure alignment with best practices and regulatory expectations.
  • Provide senior technical review and quality assurance of hydrogeology deliverables, methodologies, and interpretations.
  • Lead and support projects end‑to‑end, including project scoping, budgets, schedules, and coordination of multidisciplinary teams (geotechnical, geology, hydrology, geochemistry, etc.).
  • Act as a trusted technical advisor to project managers, clients, stakeholders and regulators, contributing to permitting, environmental assessments, and groundwater‑related decision‑making.
  • Support mandate growth by identifying opportunities within ongoing projects, in collaboration with clients and internal teams.
  • Contribute to business development, including proposal preparation, capability statements, and client engagement, and support strategic growth of the hydrogeology and mining environment practice.
