About The Position

Performs intermediate to difficult skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and installation of refrigeration and air handling equipment in County buildings. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor and the HVAC Crew Chief. This recruitment is a continuous opening and will be used to fill positions as they become available. The HVAC recruitment is subject to close at any time with or without notice. All experience levels are strongly encouraged to apply. Hiring range for a Licensed Senior HVAC Tech position is $55,452.80 - $66,310.40. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 20. Applicants who do not fully meet the requirements for a Senior Level HVAC Technician will be considered at a lower level and pay grade, which is a grade 18, as an HVAC Technician: $50,315.20 - $60,153.60.

Requirements

  • Requires graduation from high school
  • Experience in refrigeration, plumbing, heating or related trade
  • Possession or ability to obtain a universal recovery and recycling certification within 3 months is required
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates
  • Possession of a NC H1, H2, or H3 license or a NC Local Government Heating Technician H1, H2, or H3 license is required for the Senior HVAC Tech
  • Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina

Nice To Haves

  • Possession, or ability to obtain within 3 years, a NC H1, H2, or H3 license or a NC Local Government Heating Technician H1, H2, or H3 license is strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshooting, repairing, installing and maintaining refrigeration and air handling equipment
  • Maintaining records and files
  • Preparing reports
  • Installs new refrigeration equipment
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and replaces heating and air conditioning equipment
  • Performs preventive maintenance on refrigeration and air handling equipment
  • Makes adjustments to and/or repairs refrigeration, air handling, air compressors, and pneumatic controls
  • Configures Terminal Equipment Controller
  • Analyzes and updates temperature output parameters
  • Replaces and/or repairs electrical controls, refrigeration compressor, and evaporator coils
  • Reclaims Freon
  • Checks, rewires and replaces electrical components such as conductors, starters, relays, switches, lights, etc.
  • Maintains, repairs, and/or rebuilds chilled water, water circulation pumps, pump valves, cooling towers, and air handlers
  • Installs, adjusts and rebuilds pneumatic and electric thermostats
  • Detects and repairs leaks in pipes and valves
  • Completes assigned work orders and necessary work order reports
  • Performs other building maintenance tasks as assigned
  • Performs related tasks as required
