About The Position

AECOM is seeking a Senior Highway Design Project Manager to be based in Markham, Ontario. This is a newly created position where the Project Manager will oversee all aspects of highway and roadway design projects in accordance with MTO (Ministry of Transportation, Ontario) standards and procedures. The role involves managing the design and delivery of projects, ensuring compliance with MTO specifications, guidelines, and standards. The Project Manager will lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians, including remote team members, and set project priorities based on general direction from leadership, ensuring alignment with client and business objectives. This role also involves providing management and guidance to subordinate managers, enforcing company and project policies, and acting as the primary liaison between AECOM and the client. Additionally, the Project Manager will provide technical leadership in specialized areas of highway engineering, coordinating the work of other professionals, leading teams in the execution of complex transportation infrastructure projects, and actively participating in all project phases, including client meetings, feasibility studies, and preliminary and detail design development. The role includes serving as Capture or Project Manager for key pursuits, identifying and securing new project opportunities, and administering the project from budgeting/schedule stage through procurement and contract closeout. The successful candidate will be responsible for obtaining AECOM Project Manager certification.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Civil Engineering + 8 years of relevant experience in highway transportation projects, or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Professional Engineer (PEng.) designation in Ontario (or eligibility for licensing) or Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.
  • Project management experience with MTO and Ontario municipal transportation projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
  • Ideally 15+ years of experience in highway/roadway design, including preliminary and detail design for transportation projects, preferably with preferably with MTO and/or Ontario Municipal Transportation Projects
  • Experience designing highways, interchanges, and roadway systems.
  • Familiarity with design software such as MicroStation, OpenRoads, or AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Familiarity with MTO Design Standards, TAC Guidelines, and Highway Safety Design principles.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project) for project communications and reporting.
  • Strong background in business development and client relations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Provide strategic guidance to project teams, enforce company and client policies, and serve as the primary liaison between AECOM and MTO.
  • Ensure all design, budget, and scheduling aspects of the project are met through effective oversight of subordinate managers and supervisors.
  • Manage the project lifecycle from budgeting and scheduling to procurement and contract closeout.
  • Provide risk management, quality assurance, and compliance with MTO and industry regulations.
  • Assume profit and loss responsibility for assigned projects, ensuring financial and operational success.
